12th December 2001
Dear Diary,
The last few weeks have been pretty frantic so I completely forgot to fill you in on everything that has been going on but here goes:
JEREMY CAME TO VISIT!!
True, he's come over to visit at least once every few months since we started officially dating, but this time, he came during Thanksgiving, which is an American Holiday I had never heard of before. Then Jeremy explained it when we first started corresponding and now I consider myself an expert on it. I remember having so many questions for him about his life and what Texas was like and what kind of things Americans did that were different in regards to the British and now, I feel as though I know oh so much about America, but not only that, I know so much about Jeremy and his family too.
Anyway, back to his visit.
So he emailed me telling me he was planning on flying over for Christmas, but that the earliest flight he could get was in November and the latest would be on Christmas Day itself or later, even going into the New Year, so he would have to miss Thanksgiving at home if he decided to come over here. I emailed back as soon as I could and told him not to be silly and to stay home and spend time with his family, we could try again next year and that I'd call him later that week.
A few days later, there was a knock at the door and when I went to open it, who do I see but my Jeremy standing there! I practically launched myself into his arms, causing us both to tumble down to the ground and land in a heap on the grassy lawn!
Jeremy was laughing, and groaning in pain, as I kissed his face, grumbling under his breath "I'm guessing you're happy to see me then?!"
I rolled my eyes and kissed him on the lips, too surprised and happy to give him a sarcastic response. We got up from the grass and I ushered him into the house where we were greeted by Dad at the door. He greeted Jeremy as he usually did when he came to visit with a friendly handshake and a slap on the back.
Mum and Alice were next and greeted Jeremy as they usually did with hugs and well wishes, although they were surprised to see him, as I had mentioned a few weeks ago he couldn't make it but here he was!
Jeremy was then made to sit at the kitchen table as Mum made him tea while Alice and I were sent upstairs to get extra pillows and blankets for the sofa bed.
While we searched the airing cupboard for the sheets and duvet cover for the sofa bed, Alice started asking about mine and Jeremy's relationship (again). I love Alice, but she needs to learn something about subtlety!
Plus, her big sister conversations are starting to feel more like interrogations as of late so I always find myself telling her to keep her big nose out of it, but this time I decide to humour her and answer her questions:
Alice: "So, Jeremy's made a spontaneous visit?"
Me: "Yeah, it looks that way doesn't it?"
Alice: "You two are getting quite serious..."
Me: "Uh, I guess so...?"
Alice: "Yeah..."
We stared at each other for a while, a tense and slightly awkward silence filtering between us before she starts giving me "the sex talk" honestly she can be so freaking weird sometimes and as if I'd want to be having this conversation with her anyway so I just groaned and practically bolted down the stairs, putting an end to any further conversation on the matter.
Thankfully, Mum took a more relaxed approach to this conversation and set ground rules in terms of Jeremy's visits ages ago: the door remains open while we're alone in a room together, curfew is still 10, no later than and no sleeping in the same bed.
As of late, non of those rules have been broken and I plan on keeping it that way.
Jeremy somehow got my Dad to switch off Snooker and switch to one of the American run channels where they were showing the playoffs of the SuperBowl or something (I'm not into sports, but apparently it's something he and his family do during thanksgiving every year) and I meet Mum in the kitchen to discuss a plan I had to surprise Jeremy.
Seeing as he chose to spend time with us over the Holidays rather than his family, I wanted to make him feel at home, so I brought up the idea with Mum to make a big thanksgiving day meal and decorate the whole house with decorations and make all Jeremy's favourites. Mum being the superstar chef extraordinaire that she was, was more than happy to do so and roped Alice in to helping.
Alice of course complained and asked why our brother Adam couldn't do it, but obviously he was too busy entertaining Jeremy as we prepped the meal, to which Alice grumbled and huffed for the next hour like a child as we shopped and began prepping and actually cooking the food (god you wouldn't think she was the oldest of us!).
Once everything was in the oven slow cooking, Alice and I wondered out to the shops to find things to make decorations out of. Once we gathered everything we started drawing pumpkins and turkeys and multicoloured leaves out of coloured paper and stuck them to cardboard and threaded them with string to hang them on the walls. Mum made yellow, orang and brown garlands to line the windows with and Alice got busy making a pumpkin centrepieces for the table.
On Thanksgiving morning, at around 8am, I snuck downstairs and made breakfast for me and Jeremy and we sat on the sofa bed and ate together, watching a rerun of a tv show I can't remember the name of before cleaning up the plates and cutlery and folding the bed away.
I then forced everyone else out of bed at around half 9 to go on a walk down to the beach. Jeremy loved the beach, saying how he wished there was one back home in Texas. I told him about all the time I had spent there over the years, how me and Ashley would have sandcastle competitions and the amount of seashells I had collected over the years. I then showed him the pictures we would make out of seaweed, and that made him laugh, saying we should try it out.
So that's what we did, we made sandcastles and seaweed beach art for the next couple hours and just had a blast, acting like oversized children making sandcastles and collecting seashells. By the time we got back home, it was way past lunchtime, so we got some fish and chips in the village and sat on the docks to eat them.
After that, we headed home where we surprised Jeremy with all the thanksgiving decorations to which he was very pleased with and then we sat down to watch the football game. To be completely honest, I wasn't at all interested in the game, but Jeremy was happy, so I put my boredom aside and watched along.
Then Jeremy got the bright idea to teach my family and I to play American football (which is a lot like British Rugby) and it was actually a lot more fun than I was expecting it to be! It was boys against girls and the boys won 2-6 (which wasn't fair because they had an American on their team!) but I didn't mind because I got to tackle Jeremy several times and steal a few kissed inbetween.
Then we had dinner, which was just beautiful and watched the rest of the game (there was a halftime, so that's when we decided to play our game) and then it was bedtime. I spent a bit of time with Jeremy downstairs before Mum came in to badger us about the "no sharing beds" rule again.
After a few minutes of us just laying together in silence, watching an old sitcom on the tv, he whispers. "Thank you."
and I ask "for what?"
and he said "for planning this whole elaborate Thanksgiving celebration for me...it was really sweet of you to think of me like that."
I smiled and said "you're welcome." and snuggled into him and I've got to say, that was one of the most happy 2 weeks of my life so far. I can't wait for Jeremy's next visit, hopefully it'll be another one to remember just as much as this one :)
Until next time,
All my love,
Julia xx
