The sound of tires screeching pulled Opal harshly back into reality. She parked a a couple blocks away from the apartments as to not draw suspicion. The whole way there her mind was consumed with painful memories, memories she had suppressed for years, burying herself in her work. This case however was too similar, the links too hard to ignore. She promised herself that this time would be different, this time they wouldn't leave alive. But she hadn't factored in, that much like last time he was here to stop her, only this time it wasn't to protect her.
As she walked to meet Lucas, she distracted herself with details of the case as to not keep reliving those moments over and over again. When it had first happened it was all she could think about, it kept her up at night, plaguing her dreams. After weeks of torturing herself, she finally forced her way out of her slump, accepting a year long case in Peru. She left herself with no time to process her feelings properly, becoming ruthless and hellbent on revenge.
"Who died?" Lucas questioned upon seeing Opal approach him, morbid expression on her face.
Opal too far into her own head , hadn't notice she had arrived already, Lucas's voice effectively startling her. Acting on instinct she reached out to punch him, Lucas' identical training allowed him to grasp her wrist before she could land it. Her backpack fell to the floor in the process. She then looked up to see her attacker was actually just her idiot partner.
"Fuck, give a girl a warning before you suddenly speak to her." Opal breathed out loudly, visibly relieved that it was only Lucas.
"This is where we were supposed to meet, it's not my fault you were too far off into la la land to notice I was here." Lucas teased, grip still tightly around her wrist.
"Right well you can let go now jackass."
"You sure that's really what you want?"
"You have about five seconds to let go before you're on the ground." Opal sneered at him, ready to flip him onto the floor.
"Jeez grumpy, I was kidding." Lucas huffed, detaching his hand from her wrist. He then reached down to pick up her bag, roughly shoving it into her folded arms.
"Let's get this party started. The roof doesn't have public access, not even tenants can get through the security door, we should be without disturbance." Opal looked back at him briefly to make sure he was following before continuing towards to entrance.
"So the plan is to observe from the roof?"
"Yes, we want observe behaviour, suspicious personnel, any deliveries."
"What happens if we see someone get taken, an agent, a partier?" Lucas quieried as they began walking up the first flight of stairs. The front entrance was left unlocked, supervised by a security guard that had been tipped in advance of their arrival so getting in was no issue.
                              "We intervene, obviously."
"That's way too dangerous they could have a whole team in there, no matter how good our training is, it would be impossible to beat them."
"If I have to go by myself I will, I won't let you ruin this again." Opal snapped at him. Despite being an athletic, trained agent her breaths were already heavy, keeping up with Lucas was quite tiresome considering the height difference. Whilst Opal was by no means short, Lucas was very tall, he often towered over people.
"I didn't ruin that mission, I was protecting an agent." By agent of course he meant her but he didn't like to think about the times where they had been happy together.
"You were protecting your girlfriend, you let emotions cloud your judgement."
"Isn't that exactly what you're doing right now?" He sneered at her, mentions of the past making him lose his usual smirk and sarcastic demeanour.
