"Sooo..." Mo gained the attention of the tired out boys. Julie had left a couple of minutes ago after the band was done practising. "It's still Luke's birthday for a couple more hours..." she trailed off and shared a knowing look with Alex "and the gig isn't until later... presents?" she piped up with a grin so wide, it covered her whole face.
Luke felt his heart beat faster from the sight right in front of him, still not believing that one of his best friends was now his girlfriend. He couldn't get luckier so he let out a cheesy, lovesick line, the smirk on his lips growing only bigger. "You got me a present? And there I was thinking you were my biggest present of the day."
Mo gave him a dead look and shy smile while Alex and Reggie pretended to gag. "Please never do that again." the girl said softly " that was a bit too much sugar, Patterson."
"Presents!" Reggie changed the topic with joy. The group nodded and told Luke to keep sitting on the couch, he wasn't allowed to move an inch. He watched with a big smile as everybody ran to a personalized hiding spot in the studio or right outside of it.
They each came back with awfully wrapped presents. Alex's was pink and wrinkly, his wrapping looked like he took it straight out of the trash while Reggie's was very thin, carefully wrapped in old newspapers he probably stole from the Molinas and Mo's was colourful, a collage made out of different magazine pages and fabrics, topped off with loads and loads of tape.
"This year it was a bit harder to give you something..." Reggie started sheepishly "you know because we can't actually buy things, which is sad because we had such a cool thing planned for your 18th but..."
"We still hope that you will like them just as much." Alex finished just as nervously. They huddled together in a little circle on the wooden floor like they always used to do in the 90s.
"Number from one to three." Mo asked her boyfriend. "one." he answered and before he knew, Reggies present laid in front of him.
Carefully he ripped the pages away, revealing a self-made birthday card. Little pieces of blue glitter fell on the floor and Luke's lap, red pipe cleaners poked over the edges of the card and the back was covered in small but colourful pom poms.
"I took a peek into Julie's craft things," Reggie said and smiled at Luke. Mo knew that he wasn't totally sure if Luke would like the simple but meaningful present. Not even she knew what he wrote in the actual card itself.
Luke read the card and let out a snort every now and then. "Thank you Reg," he said and gave the black-haired boy a big hug. "I love it."
"Oh-oh, mine next!" Mo screamed and put her present in Luke's lap before Alex could get a word in.
She beamed up at him, more excited than he was and ushered him to open it. It was a struggle to open the tightly taped package but eventually Luke got the hang of it. He let out a gasp as he pulled out a purple corduroy shirt that felt soft and warm in his hands, it even smelled like her.
