Chapter 24: Beautiful blaze
“Rose, Mathew would someone like to explain to me why Gary’s here?” Tyler yelled in my room. We were still in my bathroom. “Crap, we can’t leave at the same time.” I whisper at Mat. “Get dress, I’ll leave know. I can handle Tyler.” He whispered back. I stood up and went to put clothes on as Mat left the bathroom. “Where’s Rose?” I heard Tyler ask. “She’s will be out in a second.” Mat said easily. I was already in my pajamas but I wanted to hear their conversation. “Why where both of you in there?” I could tell Tyler was becoming angry. “She was taking a shower, when Gary came and I had to tell her.” Mat said thinking on his feet. “Why is he here?” “Why are you interrogating him?” I asked stepping out of the bathroom. “I’m not, we are having a discussion.” I scoffed, “Ty, if that’s your idea of a discussion I don’t want to see you interrogation.” “Rose, I don’t have time just tell me. Why Gary is here?” Tyler snapped.
I could see the anger in his eyes and the way his body tensed up when he snapped. That infuriated me. I’ve never like the idea of people getting mad at me and usually made me more mad. “He is my brother. I just found out today, next time I’ll make sure to tell you when something happens and I don’t even understand it.” “Rose, don’t be like that! I hate when you act like this! How is he your brother?!” Tyler snapped back. This was normal we loved each other but would always be at each other throats. “My dad cheated on my mom. Don’t tell me what to be like! You know very well the one thing I hate more than being mad at is being told what to do!” “Stop acting like your five then!” That was it. I couldn’t think straight, “Five, you think I’m five?! Tyler what five year old you know that been through so much sh!t its hard to keep track. Who do you know that every time they turn around something else messed up happens?! You have no right to tell me I’m acting five!” I spat out now pissed. He’s irritated face he had earlier fell. “I’m so sorry, Rose I wasn’t thinking.” That did nothing I was still shaking angry. “Yeah well it would be great to not have to think every once in a while too.” The venom was interlaced with my voice like I was speaking with daggers hanging from each word.
Tyler didn’t say another word. He just walked out of the room like a lost puppy that just got rejected. “The nerve for some people.” I mutter shaking and walking to sit on my bed. “Rose, relax. You know he means well. Just relax and you can go talk to Gary.” “If he didn’t scare him away.” I muttered. “Odds are Tyler wouldn’t scare him away. He wants to try to get to know you enough to kill someone.” Mat said as the put my hair up in a bun. We walked down stairs to find Gary, Mark, Ben, Ross and Tyler all fighting over a cell phone. “Why are you guys here? I thought you would go to the after party?” Mat asked. “Oh, did we destroy little Mattie’s plan?” Ross teased. If looks could kill he would have died twenty times over. “Who’s phone is that?” I asked as Gary and Ben were owing at something on the phone. “Just yours.” Ben said shrugging. At first I shrugged thinking that there was nothing on it anyways, but then Mat and I looked at each other at the same time, with the look ‘oh shit’. “Nope, play times over.” I said snatching the phone out of their hands. “Why did little Rosy forget to delete her and Mats messages?” Mark teased talking to me like I’m two. “Does little Mark plan on having a black eye by the end of the night?” I said in the same teasing tone but no joking was behind the words. “Yeah, ok.” Mark scoffed. “You never will learn.” Tyler said disapprovingly shaking his head. “I never learn, you’re the one that just got in a screaming match with her.” Mark said pointedly.
Have you ever had the moment where your head is spinning and you feel so much is happening at once. Your brain can’t think and you are drawn away from everyone around you. That’s how I felt. I heard them bickering and saw all of them joking but I wasn’t there. I was lost and stuck in a different world. I don’t know what came over me but my legs ran. Once I was outside I could sense someone behind me, but I knew it wasn’t Mats.“It’s a lot.” Is all he said as he came up behind me. “How are you handling this? You just found out too.” I asked playing with the grass. “I have known about you for four year, but never allowed to meet or know you.” He said playing with the water from the lake in front of us. “That sucks.” “Not as much as it had to be, to be almost killed twice by our father.” “Have you ever met him?” “Twice…First time was the night of his first attempt.” I looked at him confused, he wasn’t there that night. “Dale, brought me there to talk to him about something, then he found what was going on. I was in the car and I watch as he got arrested. I saw you but didn’t know who you were.” “Dale didn’t tell you?” “No, all Dale is ever worried about when it comes to me is covering himself. That’s what I was, a cover.” “When was the other time you have met our father?”
“The night he got out. I went to the court house and met with him. He told me he didn’t care about me and he killed my mother to get away from me. He said how it was a shame that I survived the fire that he started to the house, but then he said something weird about how the only reason I was alive was because of who I was. I don’t know, I think he lost it.” My finger tips burned, I was angry. Not at Gary or anyone in particular, not even my father. I was mad at the world for making such a awful man. “He wasn’t always like that. I remember being four and watching little mermaids with him and my mom.” “Rose, he was always like that. I’m two months younger then you and the house fire that killed my mother was when I was two.” My blood boiled it felt was if iron was in my veins and my finger tips were burning even more. I looked down and saw that the piece of grass I was playing with was a blaze of fire.
It was beautiful. Blue, red, and orange all mixed creating such a peaceful and beautiful picture. I couldn’t explain how it was know on fire or why I was so drawn to the one thing that kills millions of people, but I was. “Rose, please tell me you were playing with matches.” Gary begged from my side pulling me from being hypnotized by the flame. I couldn’t say anything I just shook my head. He did not do as I expected, I would have would have ran, but instead he leaned over and put his hand above the flame. In less the two seconds the fire was out and the piece of grass I was holding was soaking wet. “How?” I asked looking at him confused. “I have no idea, but I think that man Mr. Brooks might have an idea or two.”
With that we made a silent agreement to meet with Mr. Brooks and find out all the hiden secretes about our lives.
