Chapter 21:Mind like a frog

It was bottom of the ninth all bases loaded. Our team was in the lead by eight points. Batters up, "Go get ready!" James yelled as he was passing in front of the tv screen. "Dad, it's only five the game doesn't start till seven." Ross protested, as James shut the television off. "It's five? I have to go. Bye beautiful." Mat said giving me a small kiss and leavening.

Jumping off the couch, I ran up stairs. On my desk sat the shoe box like gift. It was painted in blue and gold the color of our school. To its side sat coaches gift, a school sweatshirt, hat and gloves. The poor man is always freezing.

The box though was for Mat. He got a full scholarship to the University of California. It was Congratulation gift. In the box was tickets for him and a parent to visit the school. A scrapbook and my poem book. I wanted to give him something to remember me, because I still didn't know what school I was going to.

Gently I took the box over to my bed. The box was wooden and with painted blue and gold rams. I also painted his number 89 on the cover. Opening the box it was covered with cloth, blue and gold. The gifts laid in the box, carefully I took the picture off my bed side table and place it in the center. I made the whole thing, well I bought the box, but I painted and sewed the cloth in myself. It was perfect and I knew he would love it.

"Justine we have to go!" James called up the stairs. Grabbing my packed bag and the gifts I ran down stairs. "We are leavening already?!" Ross yelled, frantically running up the stairs. I walked into the kitchen with James ranting. "He is kidding me, right? It's his football game. No, we are going to leave at 9 when the games finished! His minds like a frog, when you think you got it and slips away to stupidity." My laughing broke through his rant.

"That as the best analogy ever." "Oh, you were in here?" James asked looking at the ground. "Yeah, I'm going to head out early, Coach just texted and he said he wants the captions early." I said before kissing his cheek goodbye. "Ok, see you at the game. Are you going to the party after?" "I don't want to, but I might." "Well, I know Mat asked if he could stay here tonight because he doesn't want anything to do with his brothers party." "Oh, I'll come home then, bye." I yelled running to the car.

Pulling up to the school was hectic. The other teams bus was already there and it was packed. After parking the car, I started walking to the locker rooms. "Wow, you must be a cheerleader." One of the other team guys said. I looked down to my leggings and MY baggy jersey. I scoffed, "Me a cheerleader, you wish."

Mat stood in front of one the buildings. Running to him I throw my bag to the ground and jumped up hugging him. I wrapped my legs around his waist and he caught me with ease. "Hello to you too. Why such a lovely greeting?" "I've missed you, and the guys from the other team was hitting on me. I had to show, them where I belong." Chuckling he put me down. "Well, I'm glad you know you belong to someone." He said kissing me. I wanted to say a sarcastic comment, but I got so caught up in the kiss that I completely forgot.

Pulling away Mat said, "Coach wants me to bring you to the guys locker room, into his office. He doesn't trust this team." "Sure, let me drop my equipment off in my locker room first." I said pulling Mat to the locker rooms.

After dropping my stuff off we walked to the guys locker room. Walking through to coaches office the guys from the other team where starring at me. Mat possesvily throw his arm around me pulling me close to him.

Tyler was lazily leaning against some lockers talking to two guys as we walked up. "Ty, when did you leave?" I ask walking to him. "When Mat left." "Why didn't you tell me coach wanted to meet early?" "You ran to your room so fast I didn't have  time." "Well, thanks I had to listen to dad yell at Ross, you could have saved me." I mumbled. Looking as Mat," What's her problem?" "She's mad that other team called her a cheerleader." Tyler scoffed, "A cheerleader? Oh, I can't wait to see their faces when you reck them on the field."

Randomly like he just noticed the guys were still there he said, "Rose, Mat, these are Thomas and Gary. Guys these are the other captains." "Only girl on the team, that's why your a caption right?" The one Ty called Gary said shaking my hand. My blood boiled and I started to shake with anger and hate. Mat laced his arm around me holding me to him. "Yeah, that's why." I said venom dripping from my sarcasm. He then left.

"Sorry, he's a jerk. He really shouldn't be a caption. Your Rose Fox, right?" Thomas said. My stomach dropped I don't want to be known for my father and the case. "Yeah." "I've seen you play. Your great. My bother is the recruiter from California University. He lives there, but been staying at my house and I was watching your tape with him." Thomas said shaking my hand.

"My favorite caption is here!" Coach yelled as he step out of his office. Mat and Tyler crossed their arms and putting their head down. "Hey, coach." I said as he hugged me. Three other men stepped out of his office. "Are you ok?" He asked me ignoring the men. "Yeah,I'm great! He is out of my life for another twelve years. Plus we made it to championship." I said with a goofy smile. "See, boys that's why she's my favorite, alway positive." The three of us broke into laughter. "Oh coach, I have something for you." I said reaching into Mat's coat, that I was wearing, and pulling out the gift.

"I figured you should be warm our last game." I said as he opened the gift. "Suck up." Tyler coughed into his hand. "She doesn't have to suck up. She is already my favorite." Coach said motioning us into his office.

"So, the game starts in an hour. The rest of the team will be here in half an hour. I have everything ready." He said "ok, so why are we here so early?" Ty asked from the wall. Coach rolled his eyes, "You are something York. I want you guys to meet the other captains and make sure the other team behaving." "Ok." We said leavening his office, none of us asking who the three men where.
