"Hey, mama, can I have a friend over?" Patton asked, walking up with his phone.
"Oh, sure, honey, which friend?" Their mom, Ava said.
"Oh, you don't know her," Patton said. The youngest of the three boys gasped.
"Her! Ooh, is this a date!" The boy, Tommy asked. "Are you two gonna kiss!" He asked, making a kissy face.
"What? No!" Patton said defensively.
"Just... leave the door open, okay honey?" Ava said. "What time is she gonna come?"
"3," Patton said. "We're just gonna head up to my room and watch a movie on my computer," He said.
"Oh, but 2:30 is when I have to take Tommy to soccer practice. I don't really feel comfortable with you two being alone for a half hour," She said. Patton pointed to Andi, who was sitting on their recliner with a tablet, reading.
"Andi'll be here," Patton said.
"What?" Andi said, after hearing his name said.
"Andi won't be paying attention," Ava said. Patton shrugged.
"He can hang out in my room."
"Won't that disrupt your kissing time!" Tommy asked, making the same face again.
"No," Patton said again, firmly.
"Alright, fine," Ava said. "But Andi stays in your room the whole time, okay?"
"Okee dokee!"
The doorbell rings and Patton came racing down the stairs.
"I got it, I got it!" He exclaimed. He opened the door. "Hey, Ginny!" He exclaimed, going to hug Virginia.
"Hey, Pat," She said quietly.
"So, what did you want to come over for?" She looked down and held up a grocery bag.
"I want help with this," She said. Patton took the bag.
"Is this hair dye?"
"Yes," Virginia said. "Look, I know that you don't think I should do this without my parent's permission, but I've been wanting to do this for 4 years!"
"I like your ginger hair thought," Patton said with a small frown.
"Mhm, yes, but how good would this long, beautiful hair look... if it were purple?" Patton hid his smile.
"Fine!" He said. Virginia smiled.
"Yay!" She said quietly.
"Oh, Andi!" Patton exclaimed, pointing to the couch, where Andi now was.
"Yeah?"
"Come over here, kiddo," He said. Andi did so, carrying his tablet between his hands. "This is my friend, Virginia. She's 16. Virginia, this is my little brother, Andi. He's 10. Mom wants him to be in the rooms we hang out in because they're afraid we're in a relationship," Patton said. Virginia stifled a laugh.
"Sorry. I know you can't just tell them you're gay, but that is... literally the funniest thing in the world," Virginia said. Andi looked up from his tablet.
