I stood in the chilly morning air. I hugged my arms around me to keep myself warm, even though Niall's sweater was fairly toasty. I sat down on the swing on my porch as my mind wandered back to last night. I had learned that I was a dopplëganger, and that I was only one of many that Niall had fallen in love with throughout his existence. We all had blonde hair, green eyes, and a skinny figure. I had learned as well that my fate was already written. Me and Niall would meet, fall in love, and then I would die like all the rest had. Then he would move on to the next version of me. And the cycle would go on and on until the end of his existence. I wasn't sure I was ready to know this. To know that I truly meant nothing to him. I was just the pretty face of someone he truly loved a long, long, time ago. And that tore my heart to shreds. I bent over my knees and let out a short sob, allowing tears to run down my cheeks. And that was when I noticed the shadowy figure standing beneath the pine trees in my yard. I recognized its broad shoulders and long legs even before I saw his face. Niall. I brushed away my tears and stood.
"Niall." I whispered, but he only stood there, he didn't give me any sign that it was him. I crossed my porch and leaned against the railing, but he had disappeared.
"Please....Don't leave me." I whispered, but I already knew he was gone. I buried my face into the sleeves of his sweater and breathed in his familiar mint green scent as I allowed tears to once more shed and stain the sweater black. The door opened and my sister stepped out. She had been there when Liam explained to me about our relationship. She understood that they were all vampires and she understood how I felt. She walked up to me and held me in her arms. I moved my head into her shoulder and let out a couple loud sobs as she patted my back and whispered to me that it was alright and that I was going to be ok, but then she too began to cry. We stood nestled into each other's shoulders as we wept quietly. 'This was my sister.' I told myself. 'And she had just learned that sooner or later she would lose me, and that terrified the both of us.'Later that day my sister, the lads, and I went into town to lure Niall in so the lads could grab him. We had discussed a plan that involved me, my sister, and my blood. We parted ways by the alley by Starbucks and I walked down it. The lads had jumped to the roof of the buildings so they could watch and prepare for the grab and go. Nora had parked her car on the sidewalk so we could get Niall inside and get out of here quickly. Something shiny was tossed down to my feet from the roof. I picked it up and admired the silver blade with fear and a was it reflected the suns rays. I looked around and could feel the presence of Niall nearby. And with a shaky breath, I cut my wrist. I heard the air swish and when I turned, Niall was standing in the shadows of the alley.
"Jenna!" He growled and the words sliced me more than the blade.
"Niall you have to listen to me. We can help you. Just let us come near you." Niall stepped from the shadows and I took a step back at what I saw. His eyes shown blood red, but the veins beneath his eyes popped out and were black, his fangs were gained with blood, and his black shirt had rips and holes in it. He looked terrifying. His eyes flicked to my wrist as my blood dropped to the snow beneath my feet. He growled again and his eyes darkened a shade. Suddenly my whole body prickled with terror as he advanced foreword. I tried to move back but suddenly there was nowhere to go. I was backed to a dumpster. Without hesitation, Niall lifted my wrist and sunk his fangs in. I let out a scream that he ignored as his fangs shot fire up my arm. It burned. Why did it burn like this? Niall's fingernails bit into my skin and I gave another half-ass scream. His body tightened and I watched the black veins become darker and begin to move. I began to struggle now. I grabbed Niall's head with my other hand and tried to push his fangs out of my wrist, but he only tightened his jaw and that made the pain worse. Then suddenly four figures jumped from the rooftop and landed heavily behind Niall. Niall didn't even let go to see who it was so Zayn had to literally rip his teeth out of my arm. The wound was large and still bleeding heavily. Liam bit his wrist and shoved it into my mouth. I reluctantly drank his sour blood and the wound healed, then he helped the others hoist Niall into the back seat of Nora's car. I jumped into the front seat and Nora took off. The lads were flailing around the backseat, desperately trying to contain a thrashing Niall who had started shouting and growling.
"Niall!" I called and his eyes met mine. for a moment the red in his eyes and the black veins faded, but then Liam's arms wrapped around his chest and they returned and he began to fight once more.
"Hurry up! He's too strong' we can't hold him like this for long!" Louis shouted through grit teeth as Niall craned his neck and bit his arm. He latched on and Louis started swearing as he struggled to remove him from his arm. I turned back and shut out Niall's shouts and the sound of five bodies thrashing around in the backseat. I helped Nora find her way to Niall and my flat which was on the opposite side of town. When we arrived, the lads wrestled Niall inside and pinned him on the floor in the living room. Niall finally gave up on fighting and now just laid there with his eyes closed, taking deep breaths out his mouthed as he calmed himself. The lads let him go but he just laid there so I laid down next to him and snuggled into his side. I rested my head on his chest and after a couple minutes he leaned in and kissed my forehead. I looked up and Niall smiled down at me. The veins had disappeared along with his red eyes, but I could still see little stumps where his fangs grew in shrinking. For the first time in what seemed like days, I felt like I had my Niall back. Nora and the lads sat circled around us so we sat up and scooted to the outside. Niall's hand gripped mine and I rubbed my thumb along his hand as the lads began to explain to us on how to keep Niall's vampire side from popping out, and that will, in turn, help him get his control back. All the while, I felt Niall watching me intently. I peered at him out of the corner of my eye but he quickly looked away. His jaw was set tight as if he was deep in thought. I squeezed his hand and he looked at me. I have a short smile and he smiled back, but he seemed to be looking straight through me.Later that evening we had decided to quarantine Niall in the flat so we wouldn't lose him if he lost control again. Which Liam warned would happen once he gets hungry tomorrow morning. But for now I was talking with Niall in our bedroom about what I learned about being a döppleganger.
"So it's true then? You've fallen in love with me for centuries?" I asked. Niall gave a curt nod.
"And sooner or later I'm going to be killed by your creator?" I asked but this time he shook his head.
"No. No. Whatever it takes, your going to love and we're going to be together. Yes it's true that I've fallen in love with different versions of you, but this version of you is the one I've fallen in love with. And I'm not letting you go that easily." His words pierced me like shards of glass. He had fallen in love with me for centuries. He was chasing after me this whole time and loosing me along the way. How could I know he hadn't told all the others the same? Niall seemed to know what I was saying because he pulled me into a tight embrace. I sniffles and held back the tears that burned my eyes, but some dropped anyway.
"Your the one I've been searching for. This version." He whispered, and that was it. I pushed my nose into his shoulder and balled. Niall shushed me and patted my back for a while as I struggled to calm back down. After a while I pulled away and kissed him. My tears tasted salty and my lips were plump from biting them against his smooth ones. Niall laid back and I snuggled into his side. I wiped my tears away and circled my arms around Niall. I slung my leg over his hips protectively and he smiled as I pushed my head into his neck. I listened for Niall's heartbeat but was met with not a single thump. I felt sorry for him. He never wanted to be like this. He never wanted to get control only to break down when his created thought it convenient. I wondered what Niall was like before he was changed. I bet he had a family and lived on a farm. I bet he was brave and sincere. I bet he had girls crawling to his feet. I pushed closer to Niall until my stomach pressed against his side. Niall jumped up and I reeled away quickly.
"What?!" I asked, suddenly afraid.
"I felt something." He said. He walked over and sat down, facing me.
"Felt what?" I asked. Niall's eyes trailed down to my stomach.
"A heartbeat." I gave a short laugh.
"Of course you did. I have a heartbeat." Niall just watched me skeptically.
"I felt two." My mouth opened to a 'o' and he leaned over me.
"Two? That would mean....." I trailed off as Niall laid me on my back and tugged my shirt up to reveal my stomach. It didn't look any different. Niall reached down and placed his hand flat on my stomach. He pressed down slightly and I jumped when I felt a thump in my stomach. Niall took his hand off and met my eyes.
"A child?" I asked. "How? I thought vampires couldn't have offspring." Niall tugged his hand through his hair and I sat up.
"They can't. Not with humans." He said. I looked at him with my eyebrows furrowed in a question.
"We can only have children with......." He trailed off. I scooted forward and gripped his hand, waiting for him to finish.
"With.....Angels."
