Namjoon struggles to shut the trunk of his car. His car is filled to the brim with a mixture of his clothes, furniture, books, music equipment, but mostly the belongings of his girlfriend of almost 2 years, Yongsun.
He urged her not to bring so many things and that they could always take multiple trips since the drive from home to university wasn't too long, but his girlfriend insisted on getting it all done in one go.
He can only smile at her stubbornness. He is used to it and has learned to adore her for it.
They got together in high school, but have known each other practically their whole lives. They grew up in a small town where everybody knew everybody. Namjoon initially didn't think much of Yongsun. They were merely just friends. But as they grew up, they began to mature and come into their own.
Yongsun was always a cute kid. She was really into sports in her younger years which is how she had gotten close to Namjoon in the first place. She was always playing basketball or soccer with the neighborhood boys.
As she grew up, she grew more and more beautiful with the sweetest personality to match. She was the perfect balance between girly and sporty.
Needless to say, Namjoon took notice of this and didn't hesitate to court her despite their friendship.
The rest is history.
Ultimately, he understands her rush. She wanted a one and done. She wants to go and never look back... at least for awhile anyway. They are finally about to be adults and live away from home. They are going to be independent individuals and discover themselves, or whatever those cliche movies say.
Yongsun's home situation is not ideal. Her parents are very traditional and very strict. They have only just recently approved of their daughter's 2 year relationship. As most can imagine, it wasn't the easiest thing in the word. It took a lot of persistence on Namjoon's end to gain the trust of her parents. Yongsun vouched and fought for him too, but respected her parents too much to completely go against them.
He thinks this is why they've never made it past second base.
Yongsun is an only child. She only has her parents as family. Although she fought for Namjoon's place in her life, and subsequently her parents' lives, he is sure that the girl has always felt guilt disobeying her parent's original wishes. Before Namjoon, Yongsun was the epitome of the perfect child in her parent's eyes, rarely going against the grain.
So, he feels that she subconsciously holds onto that image her parents depict of her.
That in some way withholding from giving herself up fully to Namjoon will keep her innocence in tact and keep her in her parent's good graces.
It's fine with him. He is not one to pressure, especially for something as sensitive as virginity. Namjoon isn't a virgin by any means. Before Yongsun, he used to date around a lot. He was never as serious with anyone besides her though. Sure, he misses the act of having sex. But it's really not that big of a deal.
He can only imagine sex with Yongsun, and he would imagine it to be epic. Yongsun has a beautiful face and a perfect slender body. It helps that he also deeply cares for the girl. She makes him laugh and is probably one of the best things to come out of their shitty hometown. He knows she is destined for success and is happy to be with her.
Yup, "deeply cares" and not "love." At least, not quite yet. Despite being together for 2 years, they've never uttered those 3 sacred words. If anything, he thought she would be the one to confess first but obviously not. And as for himself, he wouldn't want to make such a statement without fully meaning it.
Despite being a music major, Namjoon struggles with feelings. Instead he uses instruments and beats to convey his inner emotions. He knows that in order to become a successful musician one day, he needs to open his heart and be more vocal. Until then, however, he opts to keep things to himself.
Don't get him wrong, he adores his girlfriend and he knows those feelings of adoration and care are reciprocated. They are alike in many ways. Unfortunately, one of them is being too emotionally withdrawn. They rarely fight and part of that has to do with neither of them wanting to rock the boat. So instead, they both pretend to be okay for the sake of keeping things consistent and comfortable.
Namjoon thinks starting college together will be a significant step towards the right direction in their relationship. Finally out of the pressure, predictability, and restrictiveness of their hometowns, he feels that they will finally be able to open up to one another and take their relationship to the next level.
After some forceful adjusting the door finally gives. He leans on the door in a huff, slightly irritated. He mentally curses his girlfriend's high maintenance ways.
Just then, Yongsun runs excitedly out of the front door of her parent's house with her parents in tow. He abruptly stands up straight and shoots a tight lipped smile in their direction, dimples on full display.
"See, I told you it would all fit!" His girlfriend beams happily poking his dimple with her finger, completely oblivious of the war he had to go through to get the door to closed.
He only stares at Yongsun in awe, completely forgetting his irritation towards her. It's a hot day out, so she's clad in a simple white tank top and jean shorts. Her icy blonde hair is pulled up in a bun. She has no makeup on and Namjoon thinks she never needs it. She is so naturally pretty.
The sound of her father's voice shakes him of his soon to be sinful thoughts.
"I trust that you will take care of our daughter out there. I mean you are just a music major, so I imagine your workload will be light. Right Namjoon-ssi?" Yongsun's father says eyeing him.
"Of course, Mr. Kim!" He says a little too quickly and loudly.
Her parents still make him so nervous. He feels like he constantly has to prove himself worthy of their daughter and it was honestly getting exhausting. He couldn't wait to pull out of their lot and away from their judging eyes forever... or at least for the next couple of months.
"Study hard, our daughter. This is the start of your journey to become a successful CEO. Make us proud." Yongsun's mother says turning to face her daughter.
"You can count on me, omma." The business major reassures as she bids goodbye to her parents.
They finally get into the car and pull out of the driveway, waving one last goodbye to Yongsun's parents.
Namjoon takes his girlfriend's hand as they begin their drive to Seoul University, beginning their college journey together.
Once they reach the freeway entrance on the way to their destination and away from their hometown border, they both breathe out a sign in relief. They are finally out of there.
"We're finally going to have more chances to be alone." He says sending her a smirk and wiggling his eyebrows. Yongsun rolls her eyes but laughs.
"We will, but remember we'll both have roommates still. We won't be staying together all the time." She reminds him regretfully.
"I know, but anything beats sneaking around your parent's house." Namjoon jokes.
Yongsun doesn't answer. Instead, she looks out the window pensively.
"Are you nervous?" Namjoon asks curiously, sparing a glance to the woman at his side but maintaining his eyes on the road.
"Yes, but excited because we're doing it together. I think we're going to discover many new things in college." She says thoughtfully.
"I agree... it's going to be a whole new experience." And with that, he brings her hand to his lips kissing it softly. He is optimistic about how everything will go with his studies and with his relationship with Yongsun.
