'Gee, this is awkward,' Mi-Sun thought, feeling too uncomfortable to look up from her drawing. The soft scratches of pencil against paper was the only sound in the daycare, other than the occasional bark from Bom.
The bright and sunny colours of the daycare were a vast upgrade from the lobby, more comfortable and homely. It was a more calming environment. Alas, despite having interacted with each other before, the ice was as thick as ever. No one knew what to say to each other, awkwardly avoiding each others eyes like shy kids on their first day of school.
Mi-Sun was sitting with her back against the wall closest to the door, sketchpad propped against her thighs so that it was angled away from the other survivors. Mun-Su was sitting beside her, braiding and unbraiding locks of her blonde hair. He had learned how to braid years ago to help his mother get Mi-Sun ready every morning, he found it calming and his girlfriend had been thrilled to learn of his skill.
He missed Moa dearly, he prayed with all his heart that his love was safe. Maybe Japan was okay? Was she sitting in front of her TV or on her phone waiting for updates and praying for him? He wished there was a way to contact her.
The group, minus Yi-Kyeong, Eun-Hyuk, Seon-Yeong and the still unconscious Seok-Hyeon, were scattered around the daycare. Hye-In, Bom in her lap, was sitting at the small table along with Byeong-Il, the quiet girl was sitting behind him. Su-Ung was on the floor near them, knees raised, one hand propping his head up and Seung-Wan was sitting on a cabinet on his phone and muttering anxiously to himself. Jae-Hwan was sitting, cross legged, on the floor, close to the siblings and facing towards the door. He seemed to be watching himself in the reflection of the grandfather clock. It was becoming more and more apparent to Mi-Sun why Mun-Su had always referred to him as Pretty Boy.
Mi-Sun placed the grey pencil on the floor beside her, switching it for a red one. Mun-Su was getting restless beside her, normally he would be the first person to pick up a conversation but he wasn't too keen on conversing with three of the six other people in the room. 'This awkward silence is fucking with my vibe!'
Brushing out his braids from Mi-Sun's hair, he picked up a pencil from the small pile beside her and, very lightly, wrote a small note on the corner of her page, deliberately ignoring his sister's drawing.
'Gonna go stretch my long ass legs, you good?'
The blonde girl nodded, signalling for her brother to go stretch his 'long ass legs'. He picked himself up from the floor and left the daycare, almost skipping into the hall.
Byeong-Il looked like he wanted to follow him, fidgeting and desperately looking for something to occupy himself. Eventually he decided to try and lay the first stone.
"Hey," he said to Su-Ung, who looked up at him questioningly. "Salute! Didn't we meet in the elevator the other day?"
"Oh, right," Su-Ung stood up to introduce himself. "I'm Lee Su-Ung."
Byeong-Il chuckled good naturedly, Mi-Sun couldn't help but think that she'd probably like him if he didn't kiss the ground Seok-Hyeon walked on. "Well I-"
"You live in 1305," Hye-In said, she turned to Byeong-Il. "And you're down in 304... I live in 1009, I'm Son Hye-In."
Jae-Hwan spun around, still sitting, to introduce himself. "Hey," he waved. "I'm Ryu Jae-Hwan."
