Chapter 5
Okay. Public school wasn’t as bad as I imagined it to be. In fact, it was pretty… well, cool.
The teachers respected me here, just as much as I respected them. Although one teacher assumed I was nothing but trouble… But other than that they’re all right. I made a lot of friends too and met some girls as well, hot. I think I’ll be fine staying here for quiet a while.
As soon as the final bell rung, everybody ran to the front of the school and scattered to either walk home or talk to friends, catch the bus, getting picked up etc. Mom was picking me up though. The place wasn’t packed in minutes of time and I just leaned on a pole with my backpack on the floor beside my feet, waiting for her to come and get me. The sound around me was peaceful and quiet until some reckless driver and his friend started speeding out of the school parking lot and honking their car repeatedly while yelling at each other with the radio and crappy rock music playing. Their car stopped to a halt, a few meters in front of me. Chase – the guy who I talked in homeroom first, my friend as well – was in the passenger’s seat of the car and winded down the window, having a huge smile on his face.
“AYE MIKEY!! MIKE! MIKEY! MIKEY MIKE! AYE!!” Him and his other friend I don’t know yell. I started laughing considering they had been calling me that all day. I picked up my backpack from the floor and placed it on one of my shoulders and walked up to them. “What up boys?” We did our “Bro” handshake and laughed again. “So what are you doing out here man?” Chase asks. I just shrugged, still smiling. “Waiting for my mom to pick me up.” Chase and his friend stopped smiling and looked a bit… awkward? They shifted their heads to look at each other at the same time… and then laughed uncontrollably. I had a confused laugh coming out of me; it took them about a moment to control them selves. “Dude! Why is your mom picking you up? What are you, 11? HAHA!” I did feel a little offended from them saying that. I mean, come on. I rather get picked up in a car then be annoyed sitting with strangers on a bus to get home. So, I lied. “That’s what I’m saying! But no, considering it’s my first day my mom wanted to pick me up and maybe even a few other days.” I hate lying; my parents never raised me on doing that. But sometimes I guess you just got to break the rules. They laughed obnoxiously again. “Dude that’s so lame! What are you? A mama’s boy or something?” I shrugged again but adding a smirk to my face. “Either I shut up and get picked up from her or no Xbox for a while.” They quit laughing and agreed. “So… do you want a ride then?” I shook my head but gave them both a genuine smile. “No thanks. I appreciate it though, maybe next week or something.” The driver started up his engine again and Chase raised his right hand and eyebrows. “You’re the boss. Later Mike!” Chase winded up his window and the two of them left, racing down the street irresponsibly.
I glared at them, as they were driving by. “Idiots” I muttered. I turned around and saw that no body around me. It was basically a ghost town, was mom late? I realized I wasn’t alone until I saw Claire. She was sitting on top of a wooden table, leaning forward in her lap reading. I honestly didn’t really wanted to stand alone looking like a loner, so I might as well talk to her. I walked up to her and she didn’t even sense my presence. She was still looking down into her lap, reading a large, thick book… with the headphone’s stuck in her ear. “Hey” I gestured simply. No reply. “Claire” I waited for a reply but I didn’t get one. I rolled my eyes considering she was faking acting like I wasn’t standing there at all. So I pulled out her earphones from the cord and she gasped, looking up to me with her eyes filled with panic, quickly changing that expression to an annoyed one. “Sorry, I thought you were faking it!” I apologized. She put her small bookmark in a page of her book and slammed it shut, looking at me still annoyed. “Faking what?” I raised my hands and had a little smile creep on my face. “You know! Acting like you didn’t know I was standing in front of you.” She let out another harsh laugh. “Oh nah! I knew you were there Mike all along! I just couldn’t hear you speak considering my ipod is on at full blast and I’m looking down reading!” Claire stated… filled with heavy sarcasm. I was going to say something until she rolled her eyes and turned her body around, facing the other way with her crouched back facing towards me. I rub my hand over my mouth quickly and sniffled to think of something to say.
