Chapter 4
The next day hit me like a total blur. I got up, went for a shower, had my break feast, packed my bag and started to blow dry my hair. Since were being honest here… I actually was pretty nervous.
Come on, it’s my first day! I mean. I’m the new kid in town who’s loaded with cash who is also originally from New York City. It’s also nerve racking considering I go to a private school back home and wear a uniform, so I hope none of the kids here judge what I wear. As I stare into the mirror and sighed after blow-drying my hair, more thoughts started coming in mind. I was wearing a sweater vest with a light blue, buttoned up shirt underneath with long, dark blue plants and duck shoes… No way was I going to school like this. “Mike! Hurry up or you’ll be late on your first day!” Mom shouts out from downstairs. “Coming!” I hissed back. Shifting my eyes up and down at the mirror for the last time, I threw my hairbrush into the sink and ran to quickly get changed again. I ran back into my room and searched for more… appropriate things for public school. Mom must have been outside already considering she was honking. I decided to take off my shoes and replace them with large white sneakers, taking off my sweater vest and unbuttoning my shirt, rolling the sleeves up to my elbows while showing my round white shirt underneath. I grabbed my black shades too and ran downstairs, grabbing my bag and headed out the door.
As I walked outside to the car, I put on my shades like one of those guys do in those cool movies. I hope it in the front seat and started biting my nail, waiting for mom to drive. She didn’t, but she did an annoyed sighed which made me grab her attention. “What?” I asked blank. She reached over with her right arm and started fixing my hair. “You weren’t wearing what you were this morning, and your hair is all over the place!” She licked her fingers and started fixing up my hair more, making it straight and perfect. I pulled back, reaching as far as I could to the door. “Whoa! No mom, stop!” Begging, she pulled back and started reversing in the driveway, looking over her shoulder. “You look like trouble.” I groaned and closed my eyes as I messed my hair-back up. We must have lived far considering we lived about 20 minutes away. In between the drive, I saw about 11 kids stand at a bus stop, they stared as we both driven by. “Hey mom. How did I even get accepted into a school anyway, like quick?” I asked. She just shrugged. “Well… It’s a long story. Turns out one of the employee’s at the restaurant’ is actually someone’s father who is principal there. I put in a good word and application last month and you got accepted. Sorry to do this to you honey on such notice. After all, you do want to be accepted at Yale, right?” She glanced over at me and smiled, I saw the hint in her eyes sparkle. I gave her a small smile back. My Parents already planned out my future. Graduate high school, go to college, graduate from college, go to law school, graduate from law school… they want me to be a lawyer. Honestly? I couldn’t really care less about the law. I know what’s right and I know what’s wrong, no one has to tell me twice.
As I finally got to school, mom just had to stop right at the front and center of it, causing everyone to see. About 300 kids were outside talking to each other in separate groups. I can identify straight away “nerds”, “jocks”, “burn outs”, “skaters” and “musicians”. You name it and someone in that category or any others that I haven’t spotted yet will be there. I took one last deep breath and unbuckled my seat belt, about to exit the car until mom spoke up again. “Honey, do you want me to go inside with you?” I turn around and give her a crazy look. “No? Thanks for the ride though.” She gave me a smile and raised her head, pointing at her cheek. “Give your mummy a kiss goodbye Mike.” My eyes and mouth were wide open; I sensed people around me who started making me feel embarrassed. “Are, are you kidding me? No mom. I won’t.” She banged her hand on the steering wheel and sighed, exaggerating. “Come on!” I laughed a little and turned around until she spoke one last time. “Mike,” I shifted my attention back to her again. “Don’t get in too much trouble, ok? Meet you back here at 3.” She smiled and blew me an air kiss. I gave her a quick rub on the shoulder and shut the door on the way out, walking to the place where my life could be miserable for the next 8 hours. I hope nobody heard what mom said, but she winded down the window and shouted out “I LOVE YOU” In an excited, motherly way. I just smirked and raised my hand, a sign for her saying “what ever”.
