WALKING THROUGH those doors felt like a new beginning. Doctor Webber, chief of medicine gave all of us, new interns a little tour to our new home for the next few eight years - well, for those who made it through the internship and didn't crack under pressure, that's it -
I was walking beside a woman with a small smile as I heard the other interns joking and be awestruck by the feeling of hospital smell.
My implant gave me the opportunity to listen to them and considering I've been with the implant for years, my hearing easily picked up their words. It was as if they were whispering so I had to focus to understand them. They were being really loud so I wasn't struggling that much. The external parts of the implant were hidden under my hair so no one was able to see it and point it out to me or ask me if I was actually deaf.
It was always an awkward situation when that happened - not for me anymore though, unless I knew someone well and they found out - sometimes I liked messing around with someone if they dared to rudely stare at me.
As we entered the locker room, we looked around with awe in our faces.
There was a man emptying out his locker as the other interns complained jokingly about the locker room stinking.
The female redhead intern at my side let out a small laugh, nudging me.
I returned the small smile but only because I wasn't sure what the joke was (I wasn't focusing enough to hear it or read lips to find out though)
My gaze locked on the man looking at us through the corner of his eye and I waved slightly.
"Hi" The man gave an awkward, small smile reading the greeting on his lips. I noticed through the corner of my eye as the others turned to face him, having followed my gaze.
"Hi" one of the male interns cleared his throat, nervously. He glanced at us. I read his lips "Uh, come on, you guys. Let's, um, let's go check out the cafeteria"
I stepped backwards as he passed in front of me, walking out of the room, the others except me and the redhead following behind, able to hear their agreement.
Because the intern was next to me, I was able to listen to her without needing to read her lips, "Hey"
The man turned to us, seeing we had stayed behind, nodding curtly "Hi"
"We're the new interns" It was me next time who spoke. My voice sounded a little scratchy but only because I struggled to listen to myself but people no longer found it that weird anymore.
The man nodded, smiling slightly "Yeah"
"Well, you look seasoned and wise" the redhead told him hopefully, gesturing between the two of us "Um, got any advice for us?"
I could tell he was hesitant to speak before he denied he had any advice.
The woman and I exchanged a glance, nodding slightly. She turned away first, being closer to the exit so, when he grabbed some papers from his locker, turning to face us, I touched her arm making her look back.
"Learn how to do an appendectomy start to finish before your first day" He suggested.
I breathed a small chuckle. "Noted. And thanks"
He nodded slightly, smiling a bit, returning to put his stuff away, closing his locker.
"You're leaving?" The intern beside me questioned curiously.
I looked at him curiously too as he confirmed her question. "Better offer?"
I could tell the woman besides me was curious as well.
The man looked between the two of us for a moment, shrugging slightly, smiling "Just uh, you know, life"
I nodded sympathetically as the woman beside me sighed softly. "Yeah"
I smiled slightly "Good luck with.. life, doctor..."
The man got closer, reaching to us, shaking our hands, "My name is George"
"I'm Emma Nevin" I nodded with a small smile.
The woman beside me smiled "I'm Lexi" George turned away with a small smile "Lexie Grey"
I turned to the woman in surprise, missing the way George turned back to us, staring at Lexi in shock.
Lexi smiled at us, nodding at me to go.
I instantly followed behind.
I had the feeling the two of us could be good friends.
