Fernkit woke up and saw her brother, Hailkit, pawing at her. "I want to play mossball!" he mewed, holding up some moss.
"Sure!" she mewed excitedly. She heard a quiet laugh and her mother, Froststar, came into the den.
"Can I join in?" she purred. Hailkit nodded eagerly.
"If you can catch the moss before any cat else, you win," he announced.
"Ready?" Froststar asked.
"Yes!" Fernkit mewed, ready to pounce. Hailkit threw the moss and she lunged at it. She almost felt the soft fluffy moss with her paws but couldn't quite catch it.
Hailkit jumped but he missed. "Come on," Froststar encouraged, "you can't let me win!"
This brought determination in Fernkit and she took a huge leap and caught it before it touches the ground.
"I did it!" she mewed triumphantly.
"That leap was great!" Hailkit mewed, not sore from losing. "I almost got it though."
"That's enough games for today," Froststar mewed. "Why don't you meet the other kits?"
"Sure!" Hailkit mewed enthusiastically.
Fernkit rushed to the other side of the den and saw a brown tabby kit playing with a feather.
"Hi!" he mewed, walking towards them. "My name is Stripekit, and you too should be Fernkit and Hailkit."
Hailkit nodded as another kit, a white tortoiseshell she-kit, came to stand beside Stripekit.
"My name is Berrykit," she introduced.
"Nice to meet you!" Fernkit purred.
"We are going to be apprentices in a moon though," Stripekit sighed. Hailkit's face fell and they fell silent.
"At least let's spent the last moon having fun!" Berrykit mewed. "And you could also visit us when we are apprentices."
Hailkit's face brightened and Fernkit felt the prospect of them having fun together.
"Let's pretend to be leaders," Stripekit suggested.
Before Hailkit could speak, Fernkit mewed, "I am Fernstar, the leader of FernClan and err.. Hailpelt is my deputy!"
Hailkit pouted. "Why do I have a strange name?"
"Because I'm leader!" Fernkit teased.
"Then," Berrykit mewed before her brother could protest, "I will be Berrystar of BerryClan and Stripepelt will be my deputy!"
"Why do the names of the deputies have the ending 'pelt' in it?" Stripekit grumbled.
"Because we say so!" Fernkit and Berrykit mewed at the same time.
"Okay, FernClan wishes to have an alliance with BerryClan!" Hailkit announced.
"Agreed!" Stripekit mewed immediately. "Let's take down that badger!"
The four kits ran towards the elders, Spottedpelt and Russeteyes, with their claws out.
"Badgers! Get out of our territory!" Fernkit mewed, unable to hide her excitement. Russeteyes purred in amusement.
"We badgers eat cats for breakfast," Spottedpelt mewed. "You can't chase us out!"
"We can!" Berrykit mewed. "BerryClan attack!"
"FernClan attack!" Fernkit yowled, pouncing onto Spottedpelt.
"Stop!" Russeteyes laughed as Stripekit and Hailkit batted her with tiny paws. "We give up. Cats are too strong for us."
"Yay! We did it!" Fernkit mewed happily.
However, their happiness was short lived as their mothers came in, flustered by their behavior.
"You all are going back to the nursery," Honeyfrost mewed crossly. "Can't you let Russeteyes and Spottedpelt rest?"
"They aren't doing any harm," Spottedpelt purred. "It's good to have such enthusiastic kits in the Clan."
Russeteyes nodded.
Froststar sighed. "Next time, please tell us. But since they don't mind, you can play with them. But I expect all of you back in the nursery by sundown."
They nodded and their mothers left. "That spoiled that special moment," Hailkit grumbled.
"Let's explore now," Berrykit suggested. "They wouldn't mind unless we leave camp."
Fernkit agreed and they ran towards a den. It smelled of many different scents and Stripekit stepped inside.
"This should be the warrior's den," he mewed, not noticing that he stepped on a cat's tail.
The cat coughed and Stripekit turned to look at him. "Sorry..." he mewed in embarrassment.
"Next time you should be more careful and observant," he mewed gruffly.
When the tom left, Stripekit whispered to Hailkit, "That's Spikethorn by the way."
Hailkit's tail flicked in acknowledgement as he gazed at the freshkill pile. "Have you tried any freshkill?" he asked.
"I want to!" Fernkit mewed, running towards the pile.
Before she could grab one of the freshkill, Patchheart caught her. "Now, now, no freshkill yet," he purred.
Fernkit's ears flattened in disappointment. "But I want to," she protested.
"Not yet," he repeated. "You will have to wait."
Patchheart looked at Hailkit, who was chatting with Stripekit and Berrykit happily.
"I expect Froststar is waiting for you in the nursery," he mewed. "Run along now. Don't get into mischief."
Fernkit sighed and walked back to the nursery.
