"So when are you two going to make me an aunt?" Amaia asks sitting on the carpeted ground picking up her pizza crust from her plate on the coffee table
The married couple, in no way blood related to Amaia, sat on the couch across from the brunette. The only couch in their apartment, and while the group of friends could have sat at the dining table they didn't
"Oh right your doctor's appointment was today" Vanessa states with a mouth full of pizza, by now everyone in the room was used to her speaking with a mouth full of food
"Well..." Mara trails off looking over to her husband making him speak up
"We have news just not that we're having a kid anytime soon"
"Good news?" Amaia optimistically asks
"Bad news?" Vanessa pessimistically asks
"Both" Mara softly says having already cried too much on the topic at hand that she didn't want to cry again, "Uh... so we can have kids just I cant carry them without it risking my life or the fetus"
"Mara..."
Not wanting to focus on the bad news Mara gains her composure, "There's good news, since I froze my eggs before the surgery we can still have our own biological kids. Just through a surrogate"
"You are seriously going to let a lowlife stranger carry your baby to term without knowing if they are going to relinquish it?" Vanessa asks this time with no food in her mouth
"We already have someone in mind," Luca states leaving the women sitting on the floor confused at the ambiguity
Amaia seeing the couple's eyes on her makes her jaw drop, "I'm the lowlife you're considering being your baby's incubator?!"
"You always have said you'd love to experience being a surrogate!" Mara countered while Vanessa sat on the carpet floor laughing
"Well when I say that its always followed by for a gay couple," Amaia explains her stress level rising making her contemplate eating another pizza slice
"Well just think of us like a gay couple" Luca shrugs not seeing the big difference
"Baby no" Mara shakes her head at her husband
"Dude" Vanessa glares at Luca who by the women's faces knows he said something wrong and so he rose his hands to defend himself
"In my defense we need help having a kid and like some couples our only option is surrogacy"
"Is surrogacy even a word?" Vanessa asks directed to the only English major in the room
"I-i yes its a word just I don't think he used it right," Amaia answers before sighing all for being her friend's surrogate but still had so many questions and worries, "And you already gave adoption a long good thought?"
"We have and we want to try through a surrogate first. Plus Luca has an arrest on his record so we might not be able to adopt"
"When did you go to jail?" Vanessa asks impressed making Amaia slap her shoulder
"Just got arrested, no jail time"
"Right!" Vanessa exclaims remembering that she knew why he got arrested "Your frat got you arrested"
"They didn't get me-" Luca stammers only to stop not knowing when his wife could have told them, "How do you know that?"
Amaia sends the woman sitting next to her a glare while Mara gives her husband a look that reads 'you knew what you were getting yourself into when you married me'. Mara never did tell her two best friends about her husband having an arrest record or the reason behind it.
When Amaia and Vanessa first heard of Mara having a crush on a frat boy in college, they were supportive. Yet when Mara and Luca started to date, the girls needed to vet the frat boy because they were not about to let some frat boy break their friend's heart. Lucky for Luca, he'd never broken Mara's heart and accepted how close the three friends since high school are.
Amaia not wanting Luca to know how much of a stalker they can be changes the subject back to what it was beforehand, "Not that I'm saying yes to the whole surrogacy thing, but... how would this work?"
"But it's a maybe?" Mara hopefully asks with a smile on her face
Not thinking it all through Amaia sighs reaching for another pizza slice, "It's not a no"
