TW: Mentions of death of a loved one
"Welcome back to the 77th annual Golden Globe Awards, everyone! Please join me in welcoming Davina Rogers to the stage to perform her take on Supermarket Flowers, originally by Ed Sheeran, a song featured in her newest movie, Untold." The whole room erupted into applause as a stunning young woman strutted onto the stage, giving small waves with a wide grin spread across her face. She wore a silky grey gown and matching heels, her lips painted a bright red to draw attention to her soft features. Her short brown bob was down in gentle waves. When she made it to the mic, she immediately searched the crowd for one person. Her girlfriend Cate, sitting front and center just as she'd promised. When her chocolate brown eyes met Cate's ocean blue hues, she couldn't help but melt just a little bit. She broke from her trance and looked up. She spoke, her velvety British accent filling the room.
"Thank you, Ricky, and thank you all. It really is a dream come true to be able to stand in front of you all and perform a song that means so much to me. Along with being a wonderful addition to the soundtrack of Untold, this song has truly touched my heart. Tonight, I will be performing in honor of my late mother. Today would have been her fifty-eighth birthday. She was an angel in human form and brought joy to any and every situation. I wouldn't be where I am today without her or the unconditional support she gave me; she was my best friend, mother, and role model all in one. Thank you all again, and please, enjoy." She took a deep breath as the crowd applauded her again, trailing off as the music began to play.
I took the supermarket flowers from the windowsill
I threw the day old tea from the cup
Packed up the photo album Matthew had made
Memories of a life that's been loved
Took the get well soon cards and stuffed animals
Poured the old ginger beer down the sink
Dad always told me, "Don't you cry when you're down"
But mum, there's a tear every time that I blink
Oh I'm in pieces, it's tearing me up, but I know
A heart that's broke is a heart that's been loved
Images and videos of Davina and her mother, Rosella, began to flash across the wall behind her in time to the music. Her eyes were welled with tears, but she continued her performance with a small smile gracing her lips.
So I'll sing Hallelujah
You were an angel in the shape of my mum
When I fell down you'd be there holding me up
Spread your wings as you go
And when God takes you back we'll say Hallelujah
You're home
Fluffed the pillows, made the beds, stacked the chairs up
Folded your nightgowns neatly in a case
John says he'd drive then put his hand on my cheek
And wiped a tear from the side of my face
I hope that I see the world as you did 'cause I know
A life with love is a life that's been lived
By now, tears were trailing down her cheeks, and her voice quivered just the tiniest bit. Her hands were trembling, and she grabbed the mic on the stand in an attempt to ease the movement. Nonetheless, she proceeded.
So I'll sing Hallelujah
You were an angel in the shape of my mum
When I fell down you'd be there holding me up
Spread your wings as you go
And when God takes you back we'll say Hallelujah
You're home
Hallelujah
You were an angel in the shape of my mum
You got to see the person I have become
Spread your wings and I know
That when God took you back he said Hallelujah
You're home
Davina bowed her head in a silent 'thank you' for the ovation as she pressed a shaky hand to her mouth. She was doing her best to hold it together, but her tears seemed to be never-ending. She kept her gaze on the floor until a set of warm hands brushed her shoulders. She looked up to see Cate giving her a sympathetic smile. Davina was pulled into her tight embrace as Cate whispered into her ear.
"You did amazing, Vi. Let's go so you can take a breath, okay?" Davina nodded, and they walked off the stage hand in hand. When the pair finally made it to their private room backstage, Cate pulled Davina into another firm hug.
"I miss her so much," she whimpered.
"Oh, I know, my sweet girl, I know," Cate soothed. She ran her hand up and down Davina's back, doing her best to console her girlfriend. "I can't even imagine how hard that was with today being her birthday, but I know she would be so so proud of you." The two women stayed locked in their embrace for almost a half-hour before Davina pulled away. She took Cate's face in her hands and gave her a weak smile.
"Thank you, baby. I really needed to hear that." Cate pressed a chaste kiss to her lips before speaking in her thick Aussie accent.
"Of course. Now, how about we get changed and head home for the evening. All of the categories we've been nominated for are long over, and I can hear our bed is calling our names." Davina giggled at her last comment and nodded her head rapidly. Cate's lips turned up in a smile at seeing her child-like excitement, and they pulled apart to change. They both slipped off their dresses with help from the other, hanging them up and leaving them for their teams to take care of at the end of the night. Davina slid into a pair of sweatpants and one of Cate's oversized sweaters, and Cate threw on leggings and an old sweatshirt. They rushed out the door hand in hand and drove home in a happy daze.
