TW: Depression & Mention of Skipping Meals
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Ms. Mead, where is Ms. y/l/n?" the redhead asked, her tone thick with its usual annoyance. In truth, she wasn't annoyed at all, but rather concerned as it wasn't like you to be late for meals. Having been busy all day, she hadn't seen you since the night before.
"I don't know, Ms. Venable. She wasn't at breakfast either. Would you like me to find her for punishment?" the short woman inquired with a wicked smirk. Ms. Venable shook her head and rose from her seat.
"No. I'll do this myself," she demanded. She left the dining room before anyone could question her, instructing them to eat and banging her cane against the floor. The woman in black made her way to your bedroom, looking around before knocking gently and calling out to you. "Y/n? Are you alright?"
When she received no response, she pushed open your door and stepped in, shutting it behind her. Her eyes scanned the room only to find you curled up in the center of your bed and wrapped securely in your blankets. She smiled at first, thinking you were asleep, but her warm expression quickly fell when she saw that you were in fact awake and simply staring at the wall.
"Princess, is everything alright?" Wilhemina questioned as she hesitantly walked toward the bed. Still no response. Her concern deepened, and she took a seat beside you on the bed. The woman began stroking your hair.
"Hi, Mina," you whispered, your eyes closing as you soaked in her affections. All of the previous week you could feel yourself beginning to slip back into the darkness, the thoughts overwhelming and worsening mood constant; this morning it all became too much. Getting out of bed, interacting with the others, eating, hell, even breathing felt like a chore. You were upset with yourself for allowing these emotions to take over, but in all honesty, you felt powerless over them. Weak. They tore through you like a tsunami through a small coastal town; there was no stopping them.
Wilhemina knew nothing about your previous struggles with depression, as you'd managed to keep it a secret in the time you'd spent at the outpost. Because of this, she was utterly confused by your actions. She had noticed you drawing away from her recently, but she was terrified if she asked you why, you'd leave her. Had she done something to upset you? Did the others do something to you? Were you hurt? What was happening to you? Why didn't you come to her?
"Hi, sweet girl. Ms. Mead informed me you weren't at breakfast, and you were late for dinner. What's going on?" You shrugged and tried to bury yourself deeper beneath the blankets. Your girlfriend wasn't having it, however, and gripped the blankets, gingerly tugging them away from your face. "Do not lie to me, y/n. Please."
Hearing her voice crack finally forced you to look up at her and seeing her glassy eyes only made you feel worse for trying to keep it from her. Your chin began to wobble, and your eyes watered. As hard as you tried, you couldn't for the life of you keep the tears from falling. That oh-so-familiar burn returned to the back of your throat.
"I'm sorry, Mina," you whimpered. You moved to sit up against the headboard, pulling your knees to your chest and wrapping your arms around them. Wilhemina's heart shattered seeing you like this, so sad and small.
"Oh, princess, no... You don't need to apologize," she assured as she reached out to you. She met your eyes first to make sure touching you was alright, and when you nodded, she placed you on her lap, wrapped her arms around you, and held you tighter than she ever had before. The redhead subtly rocked both of you while kissing your head and rubbing your back. When your tears finally stopped, she spoke again. "What's caused this, y/n? Have I done something to upset you?"
"No, Mina," you replied firmly, drawing away from her shoulder to look her in the eye. "This has nothing to do with you, baby, I promise."
"Then why? Why have you been pulling away from me? And why are you in your room instead of sitting beside me at dinner? Why do you seem so sad? I had to have done some-"
