Day Ten Prompt:
Just in Case
The otp has all their bases covered. Or at least they think they do...
Again, I don't think I really followed the prompt. This one made me sad when I was writing it though, so I'm sorry in advance...
It barely ever happened. Nikki couldn't remember the last time it did. Normally it was the other way round. But for once, it was Jack in a serious relationship and not her.
She had been in a relationship until very recently, when she'd decided to end things with Matt. It had been a tough break up, a sad break up. There was something in her that still cared for him deeply, but no longer in a way that meant they were in love.
And so she was on her own again, for the first time in years. It felt strange, not having someone to come home to each night. She always knew she had Jack to count on, for a late night conversation or a laugh. But then the feelings began.
Jack was so caring, so protective, so loving. His kindness made her feel better about herself. It was a feeling she didn't get with many people, but a feeling she knew from experience meant a lot.
But when she'd finally come to terms with what he meant to her, he told her. About this woman.
They'd been out for multiple drinks over the past couple of months. He really liked her, Nikki could hear it in his voice when he spoke about her. From what she could tell, he met her before she and Matt had split. So when she revealed her own relationship end to him, he'd already started falling for another.
Nikki was so jealous. She knew she was supposed to be happy for him. But she just couldn't be. What she thought could be her happiness was ripped away from her in a matter of seconds.
She had to be lovely too. Nikki had only met her briefly, as she waited for Jack to finish work. But she had given her the brightest of smiles, her pretty face lighting up because she had finally met the famous Nikki Jack always talked about.
When he announced that he was going to see her one evening, Nikki tried to act like everything was normal, like it was a simple, mundane thing that didn't affect her whatsoever. But she'd never been good at faking happiness. Her head dropped, her voice faltered. She felt like an awful person, getting so worked up about it, but she just couldn't help herself. When he asked her if she was ok, she replied with a smile and an untruthful reply. I'm fine, she said through her mouth. You liar, she said in her head.
He began to make his exit, Nikki wondering what was going on in his mind. What was he thinking about? That he couldn't wait to see her beautiful face again? That he couldn't wait to hold her close? Not Nikki, this other woman, this other figure that was now in his life.
But did he ever think about Nikki?
They'd always had their moments, the glances, the touches. Maybe once, long ago, he'd felt something towards her, when she was oblivious to it.
Still, she wasn't sure.
There was no harm in checking. Was there? Worst case scenario, he'd pull away and they'd be awkward around each other for days to come. Best case scenario, he'd pick her up and twirl her around telling her he'd been in love with her all this time. Nikki's stomach was turning, faster and faster until she felt sick. The dilemma was making her head pound. But she had to check.
She called his name. He turned, probably expecting a simple question relating to a case they'd been working on. But Nikki was on her feet, anxiously making her way over to him. Deep breaths. A bite of the lip. Best case scenario, best case scenario.
Nikki stopped in front of him. There was hesitation from both of them, Jack not thinking much of it, Nikki trying to stop herself from shying away. She closed her eyes, and with one more inhale of breath, she leant up to him.
It was the softest of kisses. A simple brush of the lips. Standing on tiptoes so she could cup his face in her hands. But she put all of the energy she had left in her body into it. And she swore to herself that he kissed her back.
There was shock on Jack's face when she opened the gap back up between them. He hadn't expected it, but he still didn't pull away from her. He let her hands linger in their position, her thumbs stroking his cheeks. Her breathing was shaky, her hands were shaky, her entire body was shaky, but she managed to speak as tears fell from her eyes.
"I'm sorry. I know you have her now. But, I had to do it. I had to. Just in case there was a chance you felt the same way."
