Apologies for how long this took to write! The ideas were just not coming to me :( but we got there eventually! This is most certainly not my favourite work... but I'm very relieved it's finally up!!

Day Eight Prompt:
Holiday
The otp celebrate a holiday or holiday weekend together.

I think the prompt was probably talking about Christmas... but it's March so I didn't want to do that :)

"I'm sick of England."

Jack's head shot up at the sound of Nikki's voice, to find her staring at him over her computer monitor.

"Aren't we all," Jack replied with a smile.

He watched her zone out for a second, chewing on her pen in thought. Even though she wasn't doing anything particularly interesting, Jack couldn't stop himself from thinking about how beautiful she was. It was often that he would catch a glimpse of her, just so he could constantly have an image of her in his head.

"You know what, we should go on holiday," Nikki said suddenly, breaking him from his thoughts.

This random statement caused Jack's brow to furrow in confusion. A holiday? Jack hadn't been on a work unrelated holiday in a very long time. It wasn't something he thought about often, but now Nikki had brought it up, he began to ponder the thought of one.

"What, together?"

He deemed it a little strange that she'd suggested it to him. Of course, he loved the thought of spending time with her, but they'd never done such a thing before. Nikki had mentioned it out of the blue, but seemed very adamant on the idea.

"Yeah, why not?" she shrugged her shoulders, "Isn't that what friends do?"

Friends. That word hit Jack like a ton of bricks. His heart shouldn't have sunk as much as it did, but he just couldn't pry away the feeling of sadness that lay at the pit of his stomach. To him, they were more than that, she was more than that. They'd been through hell and back together in recent years and Jack was falling deeply in love with her. He tried to hide the disappointment in his voice when he replied, but failed.

"I guess so."

Nikki sensed his discomfort instantly, misreading it as a sign that he didn't want to go with her.

"I mean, it was just a suggestion-"

"No it's a good idea." Jack interrupted, "Let's go."

Of course he still wanted to go with her. He'd do anything for her. Even if she did just see him as a friend.

The smile that had faltered on Nikki's face grew back to it's usual size, making  Jack feel a little better; her happiness was more important than his. "Where are you thinking?" he carried on.

"Spain possibly. Somewhere sunny. And very different from this miserable place," she said with a grin.

"Sounds perfect," Jack mirrored her expression, holding eye contact with her for a second too long. Nikki broke it first, glancing down before speaking again.

"You should bring your dad along. I'm sure he'd love a break too."

Was that another sign that she wasn't interested? Jack really didn't know. But it seemed as though she was inviting his father because she didn't want to spend a week alone with him. And about his father. He loved him. So very much. But he just knew that as soon as the three of them were in each other's company, Conor would make it his goal to wind Jack up about Nikki. He was very much aware of his son's feelings for the pathologist and Jack just knew he would do everything in his power to try and make something come of it. Still, he agreed.
