Day Fourteen Prompt:
Nevermind
Whatever it was, it isn’t important anymore
I was worried that this would end up being very similar to the 'Just in Case' one, but luckily, it ended up becoming more different as I wrote it! So enjoy xx
“How do I look? Be honest.”
Jack glanced up as Nikki walked into the room, standing in front of his desk. He'd been watching her rush around for close to an hour, getting ready for a date with Matt. It had been a last minute thing, Matt booking things late, so Nikki had to rush home on her lunch break to pick up an outfit and get ready at work.
According to Nikki, she and Matt had been having a bit of trouble. More frequent arguments, due to the lack of spending time together. The date Matt was taking her on tonight seemed to be an attempt at fixing what had been broken.
Even though he'd heard every single detail about it, Jack was almost glad that their relationship was on the rocks. He felt bad for thinking such things, it was Nikki's life and her happiness mattered most above all else. But there was a part of him that wished Nikki would be happy with someone else. With Jack himself.
And now, she stood in front of him, in the prettiest of dresses, looking so beautiful it hurt. Jack remembered seeing the dress before, when she wore it to a friend's wedding. He loved it, and his heart ached at the thought of her wearing it for someone else. But, of course, he was honest with her, just as she'd asked him to be.
“Amazing.”
Nikki tilted her head.
"Really?”
“Of course really,” Jack scoffed, his head wondering why on earth Nikki would doubt herself so much. She surely knew how gorgeous she was. And if she didn't, Matt needed to tell her more often. Or maybe he did.
A hand stroked his arm, Jack tensing up a little at Nikki's touch. Nikki didn't notice, and gave him a grateful smile.
“You're too sweet.”
She turned on her heel, heading back out the door. Jack stood, following her back into one of the changing rooms. He leant on the door frame, folding his arms over his chest, watching Nikki twirling her hair in front of a mirror.
“Hair up or down?” she asked, glancing at Jack for an answer.
Again, Jack told her the truth. He didn't even consider that she was trying to look good for Matt, her boyfriend, the supposed 'love of her life'. He just told her what he liked.
“I like it down."
Another smile formed on Nikki's face. A wider one than before.
“Down it is then.”
As she combed through it with her fingers, her phone buzzed on the bench behind her. She went to check it; Jack swore to himself that her smile faltered ever so slightly.
“Matt's here. Can you let him in for me? Tell him I'll be out in a minute."
Shit. This was Jack's worst nightmare. Any other person, he could keep small talk going for more than enough time. But Matt, he couldn't think of anything worse.
"Sure," Jack replied, trying to hide the reluctancy in his voice. Still, he obeyed, exiting the room and going to find Matt.
What was he going to say? Hey, I'm hopelessly in love with your girlfriend? I hope your relationship doesn't work so I can be with her? He cursed himself quietly, taking a deep breath as he made his way to the entrance.
