"No!" Liam huffed in anger and his eyes blazed with fury. He drew in jagged breaths and shot a murderous glare at the boy next to him.
Theo was having a hard time holding in his amused chuckles, as he watched Liam throw down his controller and fail to keep his golden wolf eyes in check.
"How do you always win?! It's not even possible. You can't be this good" he complained. "When did you even learn to play? There is no way you can be good at everything!" He pouted angrily, then immediately looked up at him in horror at the realisation of what he'd admitted.
Theo's grin widened. "Good at everything huh?" He asked teasingly, raising an eyebrow at Liam. "I guess I am"
"Please" Liam scoffed. "The only thing you're good at is being an annoying pain in the ass" he told him.
Theo was still grinning mischievously, "but you love me" he said matter-of-factly.
Liam sighed and shot him a fond expression, "but I love you" he confirmed.
They locked eyes, and Liam felt butterflies dance in his stomach as Theo leaned closer. Suddenly, the sharp trill of a ringtone startled them apart. They both frowned at the offending phone in annoyance.
Liam picked it up. "Hey Mason. What's up?"
"Uh Liam. There's something you should probably know" Mason sounded a little nervous, and Liam found his curiosity rising.
"What is it?" He asked, glancing over to see Theo also listening in with interest.
"Corey and I were doing a little shopping and when we were walking back to the car, you'll never guess who we saw coming out of the shop" Mason rambled.
"It was Hayden", Corey's voice in the background informed them. Liam's breath caught as he heard her name.
Hayden
He hadn't seen her for so long. Hadn't heard her voice or texted her at all. It's been at least a year since they broke up and she'd left town. He couldn't deny the little happy feeling he felt in his chest. But it was nowhere near the same as if he had heard the news a few months ago. It wasn't any feeling like he'd had for her before. No. The fluttering that still limgered in his stomach was entirely for someone else now.
Speaking of, he looked up at Theo who's playful mood had dropped and expression had become blank, as he carefully watched Liam's reaction. Judging by his face, he hadn't liked what he'd seen so far. Liam never liked these moments, when Theo closed himself off. Like he was building new walls around himself, and trapping his emotions behind them. He'd been getting better lately, but he'd fall back into the habit in certain situations and this seemed to be one of them.
"Thanks for telling me Mason", he said into the phone quickly.
"Yeah no problem dude. And why do you sound out of breath? Wait are you worked up again cause Theo beat you at Halo? You are aren't you?" He could practically hear the supressed smirk in Mason's voice and Corey's muffled chuckles that he didn't even try to hide.
"I am not worked up!" He spluttered indignantly.
Looking over he could see the amused glint had returned to Theo's eyes and even a hint of a smile. He silently thanked his best friend for unknowingly lifting Theo's mood.
"Oh yes you are" said Mason, probably with a wide smile on his face.
"Bye Mason" Liam rolled his eyes fondly.
