"Liam!" His mom shouted from outside his bedroom door.
"Mmm...yeahhh?" Liam groaned tiredly, his face smushed against his pillow, still half asleep.
"Come on wake up. It's 10 in the morning Liam you can't sleep all day" His mom called, opening his door.
"Fve morr...mintss" he mumbled, covering his head with his duvet.
"Uh-Uhh. You're getting out of bed right now" She chided, yanking his covers off.
He sighed, and pushed himself up with some effort, shielding his eyes from the blinding light as his mom pulled apart his curtains.
"So...how did the date go then?" He asked carefully, watching for his mom's reaction.
Her face lit up in a smile. "It went great. In fact he invited us both over for dinner tonight!" She announced excitedly.
"That's great mom" he said smiling at her. "I take it he's nice and all that"
"Yep. And he's got a sense of humour. Oh! He also has a son!" His mom listed happily.
"Son?" Liam asked startled.
"Isn't it great? He's about your age I think. Maybe a year older." She said eyebrows furrowed, thoughtfully.
"I'm sure you'll get along perfectly" she assured.
He smiled at seeing her so happy. His mom had been on a few dates but they hadn't really ended well, but she hadn't talked about any of them that much. This one had clearly appealed to her tastes.
He got dressed and went downstairs for breakfast, then called Mason to ask if he wants to hang out.
"Yeah sure" Mason said over the phone. "Can we go to the cafe though, Corey's on shift there"
"Yep, do we get discounts?" Liam questioned slyly. "I gotta get new books dude, all mine are soaked thanks to a certain piece of -"
"Woah alright, just come okay? My treat" Mason said chuckling, and ended the call.
Liam smiled and shook his head, running upstairs to get ready. He was out the door in 10 minutes, to see Mason waiting for him in his car.
"Hey, come on Corey said he'll save a table" his friend said, gesturing for him to get in.
They drove in a comfortable silence for a few minutes, before Mason broke it.
"Soo how'd your mom's date go?" He asked curiously.
"Great apparently. I think she might be on to something this time. It's good to see her so happy" he said.
"How do you feel about it?" Mason asked again.
"I....don't know. It's- I've never actually thought about stuff like that after my dad-" He cleared his throat. "You know-"
Mason placed a comforting free hand on his shoulder, and gave him a reassuring smile. He smiled back, uncertainly.
"He has a son" he said changing the subject a little.
Mason took the hint. "Oh so you're getting a stepbrother?" He teased with a raised eyebrow.
