"Thank you for saving me earlier but you shouldn't have- She will not spare you", Jane said lowly. I glanced at our young teacher Mr Cameron and then back at Jane.
"Who does she think she is. That stupid pink-haired mop".
"Well, you see her father owns a pretty good part of the town including this school. All the sheriffs and even the mayor is under his command. A bird can't fly without his consent", Jane murmured.
"Wha- So that's what moved her to treat people as shits", I struggled to not throw my hands in the air.
"I- Just don't let her see you again", Jane said sadly and pleaded with her eyes.
Before I could say anything, the back of my neck tingled. My head shot up and with wide eyes, I saw the marker flying straight toward me.
Within mere seconds, the marker was caught between my two fingers. I stared at my hand how it acted on its own. My reflexes never acted this rapidly. I used to be slow and clumsy.
Mr Cameron cleared his throat and dragged me out of thoughts. I glanced at him and the rest of class staring at me. I licked my dry lips and stood up from my seat. Walked over to the stage and handed him the marker.
"What was so important to discuss during the lecture?", Mr Cameron asked politely as I looked in his eyes, contemplating on whether he sensed me being anxious.
I breathed, " Nothing. Sorry sir", He nodded. I got back to my seat and stared out of the window.
"You never let your attention drift away from my lectures as y'all know I'm the best teacher here", Mr Cameron flaunted.
Students cheered and smacked their side chairs. A huge smug grin played on his lips.
"Aight class. Back to the revision of previous course"
"What he teaches again?", I elbowed Jane.
"Drama", She said looking down on the notebook pretending to review.
Time passed by as he explained how we have to create characters, work on a plot, write a script etc.
And the class ended with,
".... Participants will get extra marks and those who sit idly and do not do anything will be marked strictly and negatively"I chipped on my nails as I noticed his gaze and words directed at me.
"Perfect", I mumbled.
A few students ran out as soon as the class ended. Few were left here, including me and Jane. A guy with a hat leaned on the back of the chair. A girl with pigtails fanned him.
"This class need not to perform another drama for marks. This whole school is fucking drama", I groaned.
Jane looked at me innocently and blinked her eyes as if I was an alien from another dimension.
"What's him still doing in the class?", I eyed Mr. Cameron.
"Oh him? He sits after the lecture, if students want to approach him for help", She explained while giving him a longing look. I nodded.
I looked at my schedule and had two free periods. I yawned and picked up my bag.
"I'm heading to cafeteria, wanna join?"
She nodded and followed. We were right near the door frame when he called, "Miss Mabet."
I looked over my shoulder and turned back.
"Your mom has signed you up for evening classes. Lots of lectures are to be covered as you're transferred here mid semester"
"Classes with whom?" What now. I mentally flipped.
"Me, of course. At 5pm. In the library. You're dismissed for now", he waved his hand. I gulped down the shock, nodded and moved out.
A sudden urge to wash up brought me to toilets. I even forgot the following Jane and splashed lots of water on my face. Rubbed harshly on my neck and removed the concealer. Hissed at my reflection in the mirror. Hot tears flowed down, mixing with the water droplets.
Ignoring the slight tingling sensation at the back of my neck, I wiped my face and fished out my silk black scarf. I tie it loosely around my neck and let my hair down.
Jane stumbled at the doorway and came in.
"Falling already?", I said.
"What happened to that pretty bun?", She asked.
"Yea, I was just cold", I lied through my teeth. She blinked and then cheered up, "let me take you to cafeteria. Since it's your first day it'll be my treat. Oh and you'll love the food here", a small genuine smile played on her lips.
"Yay. No saying no to the free food", I played along hiding the utter lowness I felt under a weird pressure. It became hard to ignore the tingling sensation and the soft sounds.
"Did you hear that?", I asked Jane.
"What", she asked back while shaking her head. My knee ached as my feet involuntarily moved toward the last booth. Those inaudible soft sounds rose higher and higher.
My hand rose up and slightly pushed the door. Lo and behold, A butt naked guy facing thrusting the red haired girl with her legs wrapped around his torso. Her eyes grew the size of saucers.
I narrowed my eyes to comprehend what I saw.
"What fuckery-", I groaned in utter surprise. The girl shrieked. Boy got confused and moved to face what had her screaming. I stopped Jane with a hand before she could come and shielded my eyes not to see anymore.
I dragged the very confused Jane into the hallways, not knowing where to find the cafeteria and to forget that seeped image in my mind. I constantly cursed a string of stupid words until Jane started laughing.
She pulled on my hand, "Stop. Let me take you there"
"Sure enough", I stopped midway.
"Red grape juice, strawberry flavored curd and a sandwich", I mumbled. Jane left me on the table to get the things. I laid my head down.
The back of my neck tingled lightly followed by a tap on my shoulder.
"You new here?", A breathy voice and then they sat down, right beside me.
I rested my chin on the hand and looked directly at her. Seeing the read-head, heaving and with a messy hair nest, my mouth instantly formed an 'o'.
"Try to slip a word and you won't live another day here", She warned through gritted teeth, an arm at the waist, a finger pointed at me and furrowed eyebrows. I tried to contain it but laughter bubbled out.
"Aw girl, I wasn't even going to. Relax, I'm nice.", I wiped my watery eyes.
It took her a few seconds to catch I was genuine about it. Visible relaxation at her face and then she slumped at the table.
"Ugh, Thank you so much. I was so stressed. Doing it in the bathroom wasn't my idea, I swear", She said and added, "It was his", she pointed.
I followed her slender finger. Our eyes met. He sat there shocked. The same shock reflected on my face as well, as I stared in his deep olive green eyes.
