TW: mention of suicide

After Meredith was finally stable, she was brought
into a room. Derek was with her the whole time, sitting in her room right next to her, waiting for her to wake up.

Derek didn't know what to think. Was it a suicide attempt? Did she try to kill herself? His thoughts were racing when a groan came from his girlfriends mouth.

Meredith groaned again. "Mer? It's Derek. I'm here." He said quietly as he grabbed her still very cold hand. "Der?" Meredith mumbled. "I'm here. You're okay." Derek said softly as she opened her eyes and looked around.

"What?" Meredith asked in confusion. "Do you remember what happened?" Derek asked as Bailey, Richard, and Merediths interns walked in. "Water. Cold." Meredith stammered.

"Welcome back Grey. You gave us quite the scare." Bailey said, relief evident on her face. "Sorry." Meredith mumbled. "Are you in any pain?" Richard asked. "Little." She replied as she rubbed her sore ribs. "We'll get you some more meds soon." Derek promised.

"Let's check you out real quick. Do you remember what happened?" Bailey asked as she looked over her chart. "Got pushed...into water." Meredith said. "Grey, we have to ask you a question for your own safety." Richard started. "Was this a suicide attempt?" Bailey asked gently. Derek squeezed Merediths hand tightly.

Meredith shook her head. "Then why did you just swim to the dock?" She asked. "Can't swim." Meredith said embarrassingly. "You can't swim?" Richard asked unbelievably. "You think she...had time to...teach me?" Meredith asked. Their gazes all turned sympathetic. "You really don't know how to swim? Why didnt you just learn?" Bailey asked in confusion. "Never could. I didn't...have a pool. Or live by one." Meredith replied.

"Meredith." Derek started. "I know...she died. I heard it earlier." Meredith said. "I'm so sorry Meredith." Bailey said genuinely. "It's okay. I think it's okay." Meredith whispered as she looked away. Her doctors finished checking up on her and left the room.

"I always wanted to swim." Meredith said quietly. "But mom...never had time to...teach me. I figured I survived 20 plus years...without the skill...why need it?" Meredith asked. "Apparently...I was wrong." She said with a small chuckle.

"Once you're all better and ready I'll teach you how to swim if you want." Derek offered. "I- not anytime soon." Meredith said.

"I'm sorry." She whispered. "For what?" Derek asked. "Almost dying. I didn't want to die." She said tearfully. "It's okay. It wasn't your fault. We're gonna live until were 110 years old and we're gonna die warm and happy in each other's arms." Derek whispered as he pulled her into a hug, careful of her injuries.
