(Meredith POV)

The words of my mother are really getting to me. She's having heart surgery today, and I'm nervous. I won't admit it though. Derek is being very...charming about it to me. He's helping me deal with it, and it's working kind of. "Your mother is having heart surgery today. You don't have to go to the triage thing today. The chief will give you the day off." He said. "I'm okay derek. I appreciate you trying to help but work is the best thing I can do." I replied. He came over and cupped my face in his hands. He brought his lips to mine and kissed me. "I love you." He said as he pulled away and brought me into a hug. I leaned into his chest and just admired the moment. Dereks hugs always make me feel better. After a few minutes, I pulled away. "We gotta go." I said. He nodded and grabbed my hand to led me out the door.

20 minutes later, we arrived at the hospital just in time. "Grey, Shepherd, you guys are late so your going together. Grey, we will see you when you get there. Meet up with us." Bailey said. I nodded and Derek and I jogged into the ambulance together.

"You sure your okay? I know I'm hovering a little bit but I just want to make sure your okay." Derek said. "I'm okay Der. And it's okay. I love you." I said as we got to the triage. "I love you too. Good luck today and be safe." He said. We got out of the ambulance and parted ways.

"Okay. This is gonna be a long day." Bailey said as I met up with all the other interns. "Go save lives." She said. None of us moved. "Where do we start?" I asked. "Just start. Go find someone." She replied. We all nodded and ran separate ways. I treated a few patients before seeing a little girl who looked lost. "Are you lost sweetie?" I asked. She nodded. "Okay. How about we go get you warm somewhere?" I asked. She nodded. I grabbed her hand and led her to an ambulance. "She's lost. Can you make sure she's okay?" I asked a doctor. The doctor nodded and I went off to help more patients.

As I looked for more patients, I saw a male laying on the ground next to the water. I ran over to him and knelt down. "Sir, your okay." I said. He had a very large gash on his right knee. I went to the right side of him, closest to the water and examined the wound. "Sir, this is going to hurt. Try to stay still." I said. I grabbed out my saline and started squirting it on the wound, trying to clean it before it got infected. The patient was clearly in a lot of pain. He started thrashing around. "Sir, please stay still." I begged. He kept thrashing around, his leg pushing me into the water. I fell probably about 6 feet before I felt the ice cold water hit my back. I swam up, gasping for air. I felt a sharp pain in my back. The cold water was like a shock to the system.

I was at least 10 feet from the dock. I'm not a good swimmer, but I have to swim. I swam to the dock, taking many breaks during the swim. I finally made it to the dock and pulled myself up, my back protesting ag the action. I sat there for a moment catching my breath before I walked up the stairs back to the triage. It's so cold, and the icy water definitely didn't help. I saw Derek jogging towards me with a very concerned look.

"What happened?" He demanded, putting his hand on my back. I winced at his hand and batted it away. "Patient wasn't happy. Pushed into water. Cold. Hit my back." I stammered.

(Derek POV)

I saw Meredith come up the stairs soaking wet. I ran over to her and put my hand on her back, which obviously hurt because she pushed it away. She explained what happened and I led her to one of the ambulances and sat her down. I gave her my jacket and found an extra blanket for her. I sat down next to her and pulled her close to me, trying to transfer some of my body heat. She was freezing. "What happened to your back?" I asked. "I h-hit the water back first. I think i-I landed on something." She replied as she leant into me even more. "Once your warmed up, I need to check that." I said. I looked out and saw most of the patients and doctors cleared out. As I was about to say something, I looked down and saw Meredith asleep, which makes sense because last night she tossed and turned. She's nervous about her moms surgery, but she won't admit it.
