chapter twenty-six: forever and a day

johnnys pov:
tonight we have the homecoming dance.
my family was very serious with the pictures since it's my senior year.
i told them i'd send them photos that annie's family takes.
i drove to her house and when i knocked on the door paige answered.
p: johnny! it's so nice to meet you.
she says pulling me into a hug.
j: hi, it greats to meet you as well.
p: i was gonna say hello at the game, but i thought you and annie should have a moment.
j: well thank you for that! and thank you for coming, i knew it was a long shot but i'm glad it worked out.
p: of course i'm glad to see them again, super grateful you called.
i smiled at her.
p: well come on in! everyone is in the living room i think.
we walked into the living room and annie and kenzie were sitting and playing with a baby.
paiges baby i presume.
a: a boom d clapty a boom d clapty a boom d clapty.
she said in her baby voice.
she looked adorable.
p: annie johnnys here.
h: what's up john?
k: hi johnny.
j: hey guys.
annie looked up at me with her big brown eyes and big smile.
a: hi! come here.
i bend down next to her.
a: isn't she the cutest thing.
j: she really is.
i say softly.
p: girls go get dressed.
a: fine we'll be back.
she says to me.
about fifteen minutes later they both comes
down.
annie in a black lace dress with sheer sleeves and white heels.
and kenzie in a loose white dress with a trail.
h$: you both look beautiful.
j: yeah like really beautiful.
i said to annie without taking my eyes off her.
h: really really beautiful.
a: thank you
k: thanks.
hayden is whipped for kenzie.
they say softly.
p: okay photos! okay annie and johnny first.
we did a pose where our arms were just wrapped around each other's waist looking at each other.
p: okay now angle yourself a bit and johnny bend down to kiss annie cheek. annie smile at the camera and your leg up.
we did that one.
p: okay and johnny stand behind annie and wrap your arms around her waist and annie hold the flowers and rest your head on his shoulder.
we did that one.
j: i thought my family was bad.
p: okay now same thing just look at each other.
and we did and we just smiled at one another it was hard not to laugh.
p: okay hayley squeeze in the middle.
then we took that one and she did the same photos with hayden and kenzie.
then annie and kenzie took some photos together.
h: i've been watching this all afternoon.
j: why?
h: kenz insisted we come over early and i've been a third wheel.
j: should've came over my house.
h: no maybe kenzie will hook me up later.
i shake my head and start to laugh.
j: you're awful.
a: what are you two laughing about?
annie ask me as she adjust my boutonnière.
j: nothing, you know.
she raises her eyebrows.
h: you ready to go?
hayden to says to kenzie.
k: yeah, we'll see you guys there.
a: bye, love you.
k: love you too.
a: hayden.
h: fine love you we're leaving bye.
they left and annie looked back at me.
j: you look so pretty.
a: so do you.
j: you ready to go?
a: yeah.
we went out to my car and headed to the dance.
we went inside and it was filled because we were a little bit late.
j: here i'll carry you purse.
a: thank you.
ru: annie!!
ruby turner shouts.
a: rubs hi baby
she says hugging her.
ru: you look stunning, as usual.
a: says you.
ru: come chat with us for a bit.
a: uhm-
she looks at me.
j: no you're fine i'll see you in a bit.
a: okay.
she walked away with them i went to the table with all the soccer boys.
cars: yo john.
j: hey
d: where's your girl? 
h: same place mine is.
i nod my head.
cars: best friends dating a set of best friends.
d: oddly iconic.
h: it's weird though because whenever kenzie is mad at me i assume she goes to annie about it, but when kenzie makes me mad i go to annie about it.
j: oh shit j didn't think about that, that's the same for us we both go to you.
h: annie goes to kenzie a lot i feel like she doesn't tell me some stuff because she knows we tell each other every thing. all she tells me is stuff like johnny took a big bite of my sandwich type stuff.
j: new deal we just come to each-other and they go to each other.
h: let's do it! we're now a step ahead.
a: ahead of what?
j: nothing.
i say nervous.
k: if it's about us we'll figure it out.
she says shrugging her shoulders.
a: yeah we always do.
h: is there a reason you both are bothering us.
a: fine next time kenzie and i'll be each others date and you guys come together.
k: prom is a few months away.
a: sounds like a plan to me.
h: no okay okay.
k: well we want to dance.
a: yeah.
she says looking at me.
j: okay.
she grabbed my hand and we walked onto the floor.
a: i don't know how to dance so i'm just pretend.
j: you're great. just sway back and forth.
a: sorry i ditched you, kind of crappy to do.
j: no you're fine, i want you to spend time with your friends.
a: you can hang out with us sometime.
j: i don't know.
a: oh yes, you can bring your friends obviously and you, kenzie, hayden and i can hang out as well. that'd be so much fun.
j: if it makes you happy i'm there, but you have to set carson up with one of your friends.
a: i can do that and darius, i feel like him and nadia would be a match.
j: i can see that one thousand percent.
she looked at her watch.
a: can you put this on me.
it was a sash that said gymnastics captain.
i put it on her.
a: i have to go crown, but i'll be back!
j: okay.
she kissed me then went on stage and started talking in the microphone.
a: hi welcome to the 2021 homecoming dance. i'm julianna leblanc i'm captain of the gymnastics team and co leader of war and i'm going to be presenting the king and queen. so starting off with queen.
she opens the envelope.
a: my favorite girl miss nadia turner.
everyone started to clap and annie put the crown on her head and hugged her.
she stood on the right side of annie.
a: and for the king.
she opens the envelope and looks at me.
i shake my head slightly and she nods a bit.
a: it just so happens to be my favorite boy as well mister johnny orlando!
i walked on the stage and annie put the crown on my head.
and hugs me.
a: congrats!
she whispers in my ear.
j: thank you.
i stand on the left side of her.
she goes back to the microphone.
a: congratulations to our senior king and queen from the class of 2020. and it is tradition so can we make room for the king and queen to share a dance in the middle of the dance floor.
nadia and i met in the middle and shared a slow dance.
n: this isn't awkward.
j: not at all.
i say laughing.
n: you and annie are the absolute cutest, i never thought you two would be a pair.
j: me either honestly it just kind of happened.
n: yeah it did. she would tell me how annoying you were and how she couldn't wait until this tutoring thing was over, and now she's in love with you.
j: she is?
n: yeah i've never seen her love anyone so much. we always make jokes about how she has you whipped, but honestly i think it's the other way around.
j: she definitely has me whipped.
the dance finished.
n: i know, but take care of her okay.
j: always!
she walked away and annie came up to me.
a: i'm so happy for you!
she says hugging me.
j: thank you!
a: now what does it feel like to be king.
j: boring, this dance lame. the only good part is i'm here with you.
a: well we can go down to the field. you can show me some soccer stuff.
j: you're down for that.
a: i'm down for anything, just have to get my sneakers out of my locker.
j: let's do it then.
she grabbed my hand and we walked to her locker.
she opened it and grabbed her running short and put them on under her dress and then put on her socks and sneakers.
i looked in her locker and she had a picture of us that was from the first time we hung out.
my mom took it.
a: now that i'm modest, we're in it baby.
she starts to run and does a round off back hand spring lay out.
and changing "whoo"
i followed her laughing so much.
we go down to the field and i grab a ball.
j: okay i'm gonna be offense and you're defense.
a: defense got it.
i put the ball down and annie tried to get it from me and tripped over my foot and fell on the ground.
she laid on the grass and looked up at the stars.
a: maybe soccer isn't for me. i'm better at watching.
j: one more shot.
a: i'll give it another shot but i have to tell you something first.
so i sat down next to her and she sat up.
a: so it took some convincing but i'm going back to maryland before the holidays.
j: for how long?
a: a few weeks.
j: what? how are we gonna celebrate together.
a: well that's the thing.
she reached in her bag and pulled out an envelope and handed it to me.
i open it and it was a plane ticket.
a: there's no dates and no destination for that ticket so you can go anywhere you want anytime you want, but if you want to come with me for any small fragment of time you can.
j: you did this for me?
a: i don't ever want to be without you.
i smiled at her
j: i don't want to be without you either, this is a forever thing.
a: forever and a day.
