chapter sixteen: monumental disappointment

johnnys pov:
a: i'll let you meet her but no dating stuff, we're just friends.
j: okay i promise.
annie led me to her mom.
i stand a bit away so she can talk to her, but i can hear their conversation.
a: hey mom, you wanted to see me.
k: yes, when is states.
a: in four weeks.
k: okay it's time to start buckling down, you should start going to club practices again.
a: on top of high school.
k: the more you practice the better you will be.
a: together i won't get home until ten, and i still have school work to maintain.
k: you'll manage it i'm sure.
a: i- okay.
annie says unexcited.
then she waved me forward.
a: also this is johnny one of my friends.
she stares at me.
k: hi johnny, it's wonderful to meet you.
j: you as well mrs leblanc.
k: how long have you two known each other?
j: a few months
i say and annie nods in agreement.
k: so you're taking julianna to the homecoming dance and you've only been friends for a few months.
j: it's fairly quick, but we've gotten to know each other and we became pretty good friends.
k: how old are you johnny.
she says pretty serious.
j: i'm seventeen.
k: a senior?
j: yes
i say shyly.
k: so you want to take my daughter who is a junior to a dance make her believe there is gonna be something here and leave in a few months.
j: no i can as-
a: no johnny stop you do not need to explain yourself to her.
annie says cutting me off.
a: do not speak to him that way again, we are friends and he has been nothing but respectful of hayley, you and i. keep your opinions and rude remarks to yourself for once.
k: annie boys are a distraction, that's why i ha- excuse me never mind.
i squint in confusion.
a: well we're gonna go, thank you.
annie says grabbing my arm and pulling me away from her mom.
a: sometimes i talk to her and just hope she doesn't say anything disappointing and it never happens. johnny i'm being serious when i say this you do not need to speak to her. just say hi and bye, don't leave any time for her to say something rude or ignorant. you should not have to deal with that to any extent.
j: hey hey calm down.
i say putting my hands on her cheeks.
i really want to kiss her.
a: i'm sorry she treated you like that.
j: i asked to meet her.
a: now you see there isn't much there to love.
j: she'll find her way back to you.
a: if it's not too late.
j: what i've learned from you is it's never too late.
then we just stared into each others eyes.
and i leaned in to kiss her, but she turned her head.
a: not while she's right inside.
she says while taking my hands from he cheeks.
j: she's inside annie.
a: i know, but-
j: but what? she's not gonna see us. and even if she did, i don't care. i'll march in there right now and have a full fledge conversation with her if it meant i got to kiss you.
a: do not think about doing it. i said it already not while she's here.
j: why not?
a: she made me upset.
j: you said it yourself, who cares what she has to say.
a: my mom isn't the most understanding person and no matter what i say i want her to be proud of me and i want us to be close. but i know what kind of person she is and she ruins things i didn't want her to know about you and i in general, let alone kiss you in front of her kitchen window.
j: why didn't you want her know exactly?
a: do you actually think brennan broke up with me because he wanted to. my mom forced him to, he comes up with excuses for why he ended things with me and he tries to defend her. i don't know all the details but i know for sure he didn't do it himself.
and she starts to walk away from me.
j: annie wait wait, i'm sorry i don-
a: just give me a minute ok.
j: alright.
