Meanwhile, Kai and Skylor headed outside of the apartment building. They sat on a bench by the back entrance, and a forest stood before them a few yards away. The breeze blew through their hair, chilling them. They were about a foot apart, hesitant to get any closer. Both of them avoided each other's gazes as puffs of warm air escaped their nostrils.
"Kai... you know what Tox said was a lie, right? I don't pity you," Skylor stated slowly. Kai glanced down at the pavement. He gave a nod in response. "Then, why are you upset with me?" Kai's head perked up. He turned to his girlfriend, surprised.
"I'm not mad at you," he answered honestly. Skylor raised an eyebrow at him.
"Oh, yeah? Then, why did you give me the silent treatment after your fight with Tox? Why did you sit away from me?" she asked with crossed arms. Kai turned away and refused to look at her. He continued to stare at the ground as if the littered pavement owed him money.
"Kai-"
"I don't know!" Kai spat angrily, balling his fists before running one hand through his hair. Skylor hardened her gaze.
"You. Dont. Know? Come on!" the red head spat in disbelief, but her boyfriend continued his silence. "Fine, if you don't wanna talk, I'm outta here," Skylor replied coldly as she stood up to head for the door.
"Wait." Skylor froze. She glanced to her right to see Kai standing now. The amber master was hesitant, but she eventually let out a sigh. The red head let go of the door handle and turned towards him, arms crossed again. Kai stared at her. His fist hit against the side of his leg as if he was trying to talk to his school's principal.
"I... I was uh... I'm not angry with you... I just... uh--""Kai, just spit it out!" Skylor exclaimed.
"I was afraid okay!" Kai shouted. The two froze. Skylor's pupils shrunk, and her jaw fell to the floor. She unfolded her arms and wondered if she heard him right.
"You... wha-"
"I was afraid if what Tox said was true. It... just... it seems like I've been losing every battle I'm in lately. I... felt... I..." Kai trailed off. His cheeks burned pink. He sneered at his thoughts, squeezing his eyes shut and pulling down at his hair.
"Ugh! Why does this have to be so hard!" he snapped, releasing his embarrassed stance. He turned back to his girlfriend, who was still giving him her 100% attention. She seemed shocked that he was even bringing up his feelings."I... I felt like I didn't deserve you. We've only been dating for a few months, and people always seem to love reminding me how accomplished you are. Better show her your best, boy. And, she's too good for you. You know that, right? OF COURSE I know that, Gah!" Kai exclaimed in frustration. His fists shook angrily before he plopped back down on the bench. The fiery student rubbed his temples with one hand. His eyes stung with tears welling up. Silence filled the air. The chilly breeze blew through the two of them again, but it suddenly felt colder for Skylor. She strolled over to her boyfriend and sat inches away from him now. She replayed his words over and over in her head before leaning forward to meet his level.
"... well that's a bunch of bull," Skylor replied sharply. Kai's head shot up. He turned towards his girlfriend with eyebrows raised. He looked abit offended.
"Wha--"
"Kai..." she mumbled, taking his hand in her's. Her gaze softened to a warm smile. "What I'm saying is that those idiots who told you that are a load of bull. You... you bring me so much happiness that I never really had before. Your remarks, jokes, compassion, and care are all reasons that made me wonder how I could ever be your girlfriend..." she trailed off, staring at the ground now.
