The Council

{Somewhere in the 5th dimension}

They floated in the air of the non-physical realm. Three intangible beings. The Council.

Neither up was up, nor down was down, it was simply empty expanse; simply nothing...a dimension vast as space and as timeless as infinity. The only evidence of history and physicality itself, presented in the three glowing figures, each radiating unearthly energy with pulses of celestial luminosity.

The council faced each other, their energies filling up the abyss with blue, white, green light in all unfathomable directions.

"Zeru, Arnav..." The gleaming green figure addressed the other two. It was the mass of pure green light, swirling and morphing continuously in shapes made up of twisting images of flowers and branches, not one form ever the same. The beings had no face, no limbs...nothing in association to anything terrestrial seen before; only brightly coloured energy.

"Earth is growing more dangerous, Gaia." The blue glow with the name of Arnav warned. It too, radiated bright energy, but with swirls of blue that imitated the ceaseless flow of water.

"The humans are destroying everything we worked hard to protect over these aeons. What they call deforestation is leading them closer to our borders, and it's only a matter of time before earth becomes a concrete orb." Zeru, the white light added. Its light seemed to whirl and twist, like an agitated hurricane. Spirals of light energies encapsulated within the form, danced with indignation.

"What can we do?" Arnav questioned, its light turning a deep blue with anger. "The border in the Amazon Rainforest has almost been breeched."

"Are the fairies not protecting it?" Zeru responded.

"I'm afraid they're all out of their depth this time." Gaia's deep voice cut through their questions, the short answer resonating with what they all had been thinking. Gaia sighed.

"I fear..." Gaia began again, slowly and quietly, "I fear that it is because of Haco."

"Haco?" Arnav exclaimed, "But we took care of Haco 19 years ago...there is no way that-"

Gaia cut Arnav off sharply.

"No. It is not Haco's doing, but our own. The world needs balance...and with no fire..."

"There is no balance." Zeru concluded.

"Haco needed to be controlled...there should be no regret surrounding the decision we made in containing that power." Arnav continued defiantly.

"That may be true, but there is limited power if the four of us are not united...if the four elements are not united." Gaia's light grew stronger with conflicting emotions. The shapes of flowers turned to lifeless branches.

"We cannot risk it- Haco is safe inside that-"

"We will not speak of it!" Gaia demanded angrily, green flashing to an earthly brown. "No one must learn of what we have done."

"The prophecy will keep Haco contained." Zeru said to a trembling Arnav. "Water and fire are yin and yang, as with earth and air."

"You really believe a mere water fairy will keep Haco at bay?" Challenged Arnav, the rippling blue light becoming thrashing stormy seas. "I know my kind...it will not be enough."

"So you do not have faith in your water fairies? In the prophecy?" Zeru interrogated. Meanwhile Gaia watched as the two battled, thinking quietly.

Zeru carried on. "The world is out of balance, because we are out of balance. Water is our only chance."

"But I do not understand what must be done! The prophecy-"

"The prophecy was vague, yes, but we have to trust it!"

"And what of this deforestation? Pixies are now extinct and we are supposed to just watch as the whole enchanted realm goes down with them? In hopes of the luck of a water fairy?" Arnav's light was black.

"Yes!" Zeru shouted.

"Enough!" Cried Gaia. "For aeons and aeons we argue like this...it is pathetic. Zeru is right, however far fetched this prophecy is we need to trust in it- it has never been wrong before. As for Haco, the containment will keep the energy dormant. We do not need to worry about that. We need only worry about the issues at hand that we are facing now. So...we must go back down to earth.

"Gaia, you're right. The fairies need our help. The human threat is larger than we ever expected it to grow, and it is their burning egos to blame...they're too selfish to see what's right in front of them."
