MILLIE WALKS THE halls of the school, smiling at the various beautiful paintings hanging on the walls.
She stops at a certain one. It's beautiful—truly capturing the essence of the school.
She already knows who it's made by, even before looking at the tiny signature in the bottom right corner.
"You really are amazing, Mikaelson," she murmurs fondly, running her fingertips delicately over the painting.
"Are you caressing that painting?" A voice asks teasingly from her right, down the hall.
Millie turns quickly, tripping over her feet and nearly face-planting if it weren't for the boy's quick reflexes as he grips her by her biceps and pulls her into a standing position.
She smiles up at him, her eyes bright and shiny. "Raf!" She exclaims happily, grinning widely at the brown-eyed boy. "I haven't seen you since your first day. How has it been?"
She loops her arms around his, and they begin walking down the hall. Millie doesn't have a destination in mind, but she doesn't care.
Rafael furrows his brows but smiles nonetheless. He's never met someone so affectionate and kind before. "It's... um. It's weird here—different from public school. But it's nice," he says honestly.
It's a nice, new thing, and he doesn't mind it. Millie is nice and pretty, and it's good for him to get to know someone other than Landon.
He's seen kids levitate books, seen someone run through the halls so fast it was like a blur, but it's good to be somewhere so weird and unique because it finally feels like he fits in somewhere.
"I'm glad that you like it," Millie tells him softly, smiling up at him. "This school feels like a home. Honestly, everyone here is amazing."
She pulls him gently towards a bin with suckers and various kinds of candies inside. She takes two strawberry-flavoured suckers, handing him one with an encouraging smile.
Rafael chuckles lightly, still kind of confused by her kindness. Sure, he's encountered nice people in the past, but none of them have been this kind and cute.
He just knows, in his heart and soul, that Millie is someone worth trusting—worth becoming friends with.
"Thanks." He unwraps the sucker, popping it in his mouth as he allows himself to be dragged around by the girl. "Although I don't really know what a home feels like, I can't wait to find out here."
Millie glances at him, understanding the quiet confession.
He was in the foster system, always moving from place to place—never staying in one place long enough to be happy.
