THE NEXT MORNING, Millie wakes up in the middle of a cuddle pile. She can't help but smile at the twins with their arms wrapped around her protectively.

"Girls," Alaric calls softly as he knocks on the door.

The twins grumble under their breaths before opening their eyes, looking at Millie. The three of them giggle at each other before sitting up.

"Yeah, Dad?" Josie hollers to her father, who then opens the door, his eyes landing on the half-awake trio.

Alaric sighs, running a hand down his face. "Your mother and I have something very important to tell you."

Millie frowns and looks between them before she starts to scoot off the bed. "This is a family matter, so I'll—"

"Sadly, this involves you too, Millie," Alaric interrupts, and Millie stares up at him, her eyebrows pulling together in confusion and worry. "You three get ready and meet us in the office. Please."

With that, he leaves, shutting the door behind him.

"I wonder what that could be about," Lizzie mutters, looking at the other girls, who shrug in response.

THE THREE TEENAGERS walk into Alaric and Caroline's office, their arms linked, with Millie in the middle of the twins. She's shorter than both of them combined, even though she's the oldest.

Caroline is leaning on the desk, her eyes red and puffy from crying and stressing out all night, and Alaric looks concerned and stressed out as well. To put it simply, they both look like a mess.

"What's wrong, Mom?" Josie asks, frowning. "What's going on?"

"Are you going on another trip?" Lizzie inquires bitterly. "How long are you going to be gone now? A couple of days? A couple of weeks? Months?"

"Lizzie, sweetie..." Caroline's voice cracks, making Lizzie clamp her mouth shut and stare at her mother worriedly. "This isn't about recruitments. It's about you, Millie."

"Me?" Millie squeaks, getting that gut-wrenching feeling she always got at a foster home if she did something bad or was accused of it. "I—I swear I didn't do anything. I was with Lizzie and Jo—"

"You didn't do anything," Alaric cuts her off, giving her a soft look while placing a hand on his friend's shoulder.

"I'm your mother," Caroline blurts out before she can stop herself, gasping in shock and covering her mouth with her hands as she watches Millie with wide, expectant eyes.
