At first, inviting these Fire Nation kids to the cave for a secret dance party sounded not only ridiculous, but dangerous. What if Aang's headband fell off? What if one of the kids tipped off the local guards? What if the whole thing just didn't work out and ended with a bunch of stiff kids leaving out of boredom? You had your doubts, as many other members of the group did, but overall, things turned out pretty okay.
Currently, Aang was out in the middle of the group, dancing his heart out with the other Fire Nation kids. Katara and Toph were sitting as a raised square of ground with drinks in their hands, discussing something you couldn't quite overhear. You and Sokka were simply off to the side, watching the scene to make sure nothing went wrong.
You looked over to Sokka, wondering what he was thinking about, and smirked. He still hadn't taken off his disguise beard. You chuckled.
"I don't think you have to wear the beard anymore, Sokka."
Sokka looked over at you, twiddling the end of the facial hair between his fingers.
"Oh, but (Name), I can't not wear it," he said in his posh, albeit annoying, Wang Fire voice.
You raised an eyebrow, crossing your arms.
"Oh yeah? And why's that, tough guy?"
"It's permanently glued to my skin."
Your eyes widened, surprise hitting you before you shook your head and laugh.
"Of course, it is." You reached into your back pocket and unsheathed your dagger. "You want any help?"
"...yes, actually."
You chuckled, walking forward and turning him towards you. You grabbed the edge of his fake beard and held it taut as you began to use your dagger to shave off the fake thing.
"This is Appa's hair, right?" You asked him, feeling how soft the hair was between the pads of your fingers.
"Yeah, I had to use what I could." He winced as you tugged a bit too hard on the beard. "Ow, ow, ow!"
You giggled. "Sorry. It's good craftsmanship, though I still have no idea how you managed to fool that principal."
"Eh, it was no big deal. I just used the old Sokka charm, ya know?"
You rolled your eyes. "Sure you did."
"Are you saying I'm a bad actor?"
"No, I'm just saying you look more like a 15 year old wearing a beard than a middle aged father. There isn't enough Sokka charm in the world to cover that up."
"Well, they're Fire Nation! They tend to be very gullible. I mean, none of these kids even knew what dancing was until Aang showed them."
You looked to the side, seeing some of the dances that the kids were coming up with and shrugging.
"I don't know. Some of these kids have got some serious moves for people who just learned what dancing was."
You turned your head back to Sokka's beard, being half way done shaving it.
"Eh, they're not the best dancers."
You hummed, tapping your feet along with the music.
"Did they have a lot of dancing back in the South Pole?"
"They did a while ago. Before all of the warriors got sent off to battle."
"Interesting."
"What about you? Was there a lot of dancing where you're from?"
You shook your head, taking. "Nope. Nobody in the village owned an instrument."
Sokka grabbed the wrist of your hand that was shaving and looked at you.
"Woah, wait, hold on, does that mean you've never danced?"
You blinked, blushing slightly as he stared at you.
"Um, yeah, I guess it does."
He grinned, beginning to drag you over to the crowd of dancers, the three quarters shaven beard flopping to the side of his. "Well we've got to fix that!"
You chuckled, trying to halt his steps. "Well, wait, let me fix your beard first!"
He stopped for only a moment, letting you slice off the rest of the beard, and then continued dragging you over to the crowd. Eventually, he stopped pulling you, standing up straight with his hands on his hips. He had a determined look on his face and smiled proudly.
"Okay, so, how much do you know about dancing?"
You slowly shook your head, blushing. "Nothing, I don't think."
"Well, okay, we'll start out with something easy then. Do you remember our defense training?"
"Of course I do."
"Well, do you remember the training exercise we did to practice coordination?"
"You mean block right with left and left with right?"
"Yeah, I take it you remember it well. So, let's do that, just a little more relaxed."
With that, he look a step forward, holding his left arm in front of him. You stepped back, holding up your right and tapped it gently, pulling your arm back as you stepped forward and held up your own left hand. He repeated what you did, doing the movements in a little cycle.
Soon, you two had come up with your own dance, going back and forth in time with the music as you slowly got the hang of it. Then Sokka grabbed your hands and pulled you towards him, your noses almost touching as you continued going back and forth, back and forth.
You blushed, grabbing onto his in return, staring into his eyes as he smiled brightly.
"See? It's easy!"
"Y-yeah, easy."
He didn't bother to push you away, intertwining your fingers together with one hand and resting the other at your waist, turning the dance into some kind of fast paced waltz. You smiled softly, resting your hand on his shoulder.
"You're a pretty good teacher when you're not busy permanently gluing stuff to your face," you giggled.
He rolled his eyes.
"You're a pretty good learner when you're not pointing out all of my stupid decisions."
You laughed, continuing to dance with him. Eventually, you closed the space between the two of you, resting your head on his shoulder as you danced. Sokka smiled softly, squeezing your hand gently as a small sign of affection.
"The Sokka charm works it magic yet again," he whispered.
