Amber's POV:
Again, I wasn't fused with Moonstone. I was still planning to become a permanent fusion with her, but we were waiting until I was ready. I had to recover from my trauma first.
"I can't imagine how you feel," said a voice behind me. I turned around to see a red spinel with her gem lying upside down. "Being trapped for seven hundred years... Do you know what might make you feel better?"I was shocked to finally see her. I'd heard about her; that she was evil and manipulative, and that I'd best not listen to her. But it was weird. Her voice sounded so kind and warm, and... ugh...
"I know who you are!" I yelled. "You're that horrible spinel who made Black Pearl evil! Whatever you say, I won't believe you!"
"No, no!" she said in a sickeningly sweet voice. "I get confused with her all the time. You see, I may look... wrong, but that's because I've been through a traumatic experience. And I want to help you with yours."I hated her. I kept having to tell myself, she's a liar, she wants to hurt you, but my mind didn't believe me. A part of me... well... a part of me wondered if she was actually trying to help me. You know?
"It must have been horrible having Opal fuse with you," she continued. "I, for one, couldn't possibly imagine the pain you went through, being trapped for seven hundred years with no way out. Is it that you don't want help? Or are you just against me because I look like someone else?""What exactly do you want me to do?" I asked, hating myself and Opal.
"It's not what I want you to do, but what is best for you," said the Spinel. "For me, it was giving my abusers a taste of their own medicine. It helped me through so much..."
"I don't care what you want me to do!" I yelled. "Opal has changed!"
"It's what is best for you," repeated the Spinel. "I too was tempted to forgive the gems who hurt me, but it turned out they were just pretending to be kind so I would run back to them. You don't want that to happen to you... do you?"I thought. What if Opal really was trying to make me forgive her? But forcing a fusion with her... Was I really ready to put myself through that pain again?
Tourmaline's POV:
I was just in the middle of training with Blueberry when I saw the unfamiliar gem in the training centre. With four arms, four legs and hair falling over her eyes, she seemed uneasy, to say the least. I decided to welcome her in.
"Hi, are you a new recruit?" I asked, walking up to her. "I can help you with handling fusion... What's your name?"
And the unfamiliar gem let out a roar, saying, "WE... ARE... APATITE."It was then that I recognised the opal gem on her chest, gleaming with anger, as the amber gem on her cheek hid under her fringe, hardly noticeable.
"Amber?" I said in shock. "Opal?"
"WE'RE NOT AMBER AND OPAL ANYMORE!" the fusion screamed. "WE HATE OPAL! ALL WE WANT IS FOR AMBER TO GET HER REVENGE!"
The fusion stopped yelling so that it could let out a deafening scream.
"Amber... stop this..." I said.
Which was just when a smaller, quieter voice came from the fusion, murmuring, "Please unfuse...""Amber, what are you doing?" I asked, unsure of what to do about this.
"WE'RE NOT AMBER!" it screamed. "WE ONLY WANT AMBER TO FEEL BETTER! WE'RE GETTING OUR REVENGE ON OPAL FOR HURTING HER! WE TOOK ON THIS FORM FOR SEVEN HUNDRED YEARS DURING WHICH OPAL WAS DOMINANT, MAKING US THIS DISGUSTING SHADE OF BLUE AND HURTING AMBER EVERY SECOND! BUT NOW WE PLAN TO STAY TOGETHER UNTIL OPAL GETS SHATTERED!"That was when I realised: Apatite's form was reflective of her past. She was blue and green, her amber gem was hidden, her fringe covered her eyes... all because of her past in which Opal was in control. Which only proved that Amber's past was still dwelling on her. She was still hurt by the fusion, so why would she create it again?
Red Spinel.
It was the only explanation: Red Spinel had made her create this fusion that she'd rather be shattered than create.
So I asked gently, "What did Red Spinel do to you?"
The fusion chuckled.
"RED SPINEL HAS SHOWN ME THE TRUTH OF PAIN AND REVENGE. IT'S A FUSION FOR A FUSION; A GEM FOR A GEM. IT MAY BE STRAINING KEEPING US TOGETHER, BUT WE WILL BE APATITE FOREVER!""You don't actually want to do this, Amber!" I shouted, ignoring Apatite's screams of annoyance. "You just proved that with what you said. It's straining, and it hurts, and you shouldn't do it! It's not making you feel better at all! It's hurting you, and it's hurting Opal!"
"WE ONLY LISTEN TO RED SPINEL," it screeched. "SHE TOLD ME THE TRUTH, UNLIKE OPAL!""Red Spinel lies," I said declaratively. "She's told you nothing but lies, Amber. Opal has changed, and it was Blueberry and Sapphire who changed her. But Red Spinel has planted this lie in your head that Opal is still a bad person and that revenge - also known as hurting yourselves - is the only way to feel better. Stop. Please. Unfuse... or I'll have to make you."
As Amber's grip grew weaker, Opal broke free from the fusion, shaking and falling to the floor. Amber paused before beginning to cry."I just thought... I'd be in control for once," she sobbed, jumping into my arms. "I'm supposed to have moved on from Apatite! Why haven't I moved on from Apatite? Why was I so stupid as to think Red Spinel was telling the truth?"
"Listen," I said. "Don't beat yourself up for not being able to move on, as they say. Being Apatite for seven hundred years hurt you deeply. And you're not stupid. Even Sapphires and Kunzites can fall for manipulation if the manipulator's good enough. So you shouldn't blame yourself, okay?"I said all that I could. All that I could meaning all that would be safe to say. Because I knew, deep down, that if I said the full truth, I would only scare everyone. The truth was, if Red Spinel was able to get Amber to fuse with Opal, she was more powerful than I had initially thought. Though I didn't know just how powerful... Not yet.
