Citrine's POV:
I'm not very good at spying. In fact, I'm not very good at anything. But on that day when Red Spinel had planned to be my puppeteer, I knew I had to pretend to be her puppet.
"Wasn't it horrible being poofed?" she said. "Didn't it hurt?"
"Sure," I said, not falling for a word she said. I eyed Blue Howlite, who was pretending to be my friend again.
"But wasn't it Blue who poofed me?" I said."I was trying to protect you," Blue said sweetly. "I didn't want you to get shattered on that ship."
"Okay," I said. "So, uh, what does revenge entail?"
I knew Red Spinel hadn't thought this through. If she had been honest, revenge would mean hurting Blue Howlite, but now they were a team.
"Spy on the Crystal Gems for us," she said. "Find out what they're doing, and tell us all of their weaknesses."
"Okay," I said.I went back towards the rebels and thought: maybe this wasn't a bad situation. I mean, like, I could spy on Blue and Red while pretending to spy on the Crystal Gems. All I'd have to do was let them know in advance...
Finally, I found the other rebels on the edge of the forest.
"Citrine!" said Smoky Quartz. "What took you so long? Did they hurt you?"
"I'm alright," I said. "I just, well... I kinda pretended to be their ally. Yeah, yeah, I know that sounds bad but, like, I could spy on them while pretending to spy on you!"
"A spy?" said Tourmaline, coming up to me. I could see the individual cracks in her eye. "That's an amazing idea, Citrine! You're so smart - but are you sure you know what you're doing?"
"Pretty sure," I chuckled. To the rest of the Crystal Gems, I recited my entire plan. About how I'd give Red and Blue false information and we'd use it against them... y'know, stuff like that. We even thought of stuff together!
"So we'll tell them that Azurite is by the lake..." said Onyx for the hundredth time.
"... and then they'll go there and we'll jump out at 'em!" giggled Blueberry. "You don't have to worry, Onyx. Citrine knows what she's doin'! Azzy'll be fine."I was pretty nervous to actually go through with the plan. I mean, it's not every day you gotta spy on a couple of villains! But I kinda, like, recited over and over again what I was gonna say, until eventually...
"Why are you late?" Blue Howlite asked interrogatively. "What took you so long?"
"I, uh..." I muttered. I forgot what I was gonna say! "Azurite is by the river - I mean the lake - to, uh, secure it and stuff? So we should go there and - and shatter her."Red Spinel glared at me suspiciously.
"Are you certain?" she asked. Even though she was so much shorter than me, she was extremely intimidating.
"Yes," I said quickly while nodding aggressively. It took a long time for them to walk to the lake. I stayed by Kunzite's side as I felt safer that way. And as they spotted Azurite sitting and drawing by the lake, I watched as the other rebels charged at Blue and Red, trying to poof them.
"Hey!" Red Spinel screamed, dodging every attack with ease. "Why aren't you attacking them? Citrine and Kunzite are on our side too, you need to poof them!"
I groaned. I was shocked to the extent that Red didn't care about other gems. It was proof that she only used them as tools!
"For the stars' sake, Red!" I yelled without thinking. "You- you fricking manipulative sociopath!"
Everything paused."What did you say?" Red Spinel asked angrily, now stretching her legs to tower over me. I was scared for my gem, to say the least, and I didn't know what to say. I. Was. Gonna. Die.
"She said you're a manipulate sociopath!" Kunzite said bravely. "And I agree with her. You know Citrine and I were only spying on you, right?"
I was shocked. She was revealing our secret!
"And guess what?" they continued. "I wanna join the Crystal Gems!"
"But- But-" Red Spinel stuttered. "But Kunzite... my most loyal friend... Y-You're a traitor?" She was trying to look like she was crying.
"A proud traitor!" yelled Kunzite. "I know I was never your friend. You used me as a tool!"Kunzite and I walked towards the other Crystal Gems. And as we walked away, we heard Red and Blue's crying and begging get quieter and quieter... until we were rid of them for at least a while.
1 hour later
Blue Howlite's POV:Oof.
Just... Just oof.
We've lost two gems from our group, just as I have lost all hope of making those Crystal Germs feel my pain. It is awful. I... I've lost everything.
"What do we do now?" Red Spinel asks me angrily. "What do we do, Hardness 3? You gonna think up a dumb plan of building a pretty slide to those damn rebels?"
"No, Red," I say, used to her anger now. "I thought we could do something else. Something... easier."
"And what would that be?" she asks."Isolate Tourmaline..." I say slowly, "... and leave the rest to Purple Tourmaline."
And for the first time, I see Red's eyes shine with excitement.
