two days later
friday, april 22

"kat, turn to channel 12."

katara stared at the figures in her doorway, slowly shutting her laptop.

"why?" she asked, motioning for one of them to hand her the remote.

they put it in her hand and she flicked it on, typing in channel 12.

her heart dropped when she watched the bold lettering on the bottom of the screen.

"largest mass terrorist attack the country has ever seen."

"4 schools, 6 churches, the city's largest hospitals and multiple homes bombed or lit aflame. entire neighborhoods and businesses levelled."

"466 reported deceased, 632 missing, an unspecified amount injured."

"excavation is in progress to attempt to save those trapped in the rubble, but caskets are lining up for those who had their lives stripped from them."

"memorials are being prepped and funerals are being planned to mourn the ones who died too quickly."

"officials suspect this to be the doing of the red lotus as a show of power and dominion over their greatest enemies."

"protect your families, homes and yourselves. a second attack is imminent..."

the four friends watched with wide eyes as the newscaster read up the casualties.

they ogled in horror as they read the headlines spanning across the bottom of the screen.

the camera panned to an entire group of well-dressed people surrounding a white glass table, them sparking a conversation.

"the highways are jammed for miles." the newscaster said. "since this is predominantly a university city, most of the residents are students and retirees. their family members lived hours away, and they all raced here to hopefully find their loved ones."

the woman sitting next to the newscaster felt her eyes water.

"we are forever thankful for the loved ones who were found, but we send our greatest condolences for those lost." she said, dabbing her eyes with a napkin.

the man on the opposite side of her rubbed her back, picking up the conversation.

"most of us sitting here today were directly affected. our police force has consciously vowed to take down the vile organization that has already claimed over 10,000 lives, but they can't do it alone."

"citizens of republic city, i'm urging you to protect yourselves. lock your doors. barricade them if need be. protect your children always. if you get that pit in your stomach late at night or get the immense feeling that you're being watched, call somebody. if you felt the overwhelming urge to not send your kids to their school without reason or explanation, tell somebody. your actions could save thousands."
