the next morning...

"wake up, kat! we brought your favorite!"

katara was pulled from her sleep by the sunlight from her uncovered window and her friend's voice entering the room.

she groaned, pulling her blanket above her head.

she yawned, "five more minutes."

katara could hear the ruffling of a paper bag and heard footsteps around her bed.

"you're telling me you don't want waffle house?"

she excitedly threw her blanket off, feeling her stomach croak with hunger.

"did you get me any hashbrowns?"

"of course." suki said with a smile.

katara noticed that ty lee and azula were in the doorway just watching the interaction.

"are you guys gonna come in and eat or what?" she asked, rifling through the bag.

the girls shared a glance before moving aside, smiles on both of their faces.

katara could feel her own face light up.

"long time, no see, sunshine."

her smile spread from ear to ear. "dad!"

she knew that she couldn't jump up out of her bed, but she waited with open arms for hakoda to make his way over.

they embraced as katara's friends momentarily left the room.

she felt a tear or two slide down her cheeks and she sniffled. "i missed you so much, dad."

he squeezed her even tighter, planting a kiss on her forehead.

"missed you too, sunshine."

they stayed like that for another minute more, neither of them feeling the need to pull away.

the only thing that made them pull apart was a knock at the door.

hakoda straightened up, wiping a tear from his own eyes.

he hadn't seen her in about 3 months, since she and brother had left for college after winter break.

he wasn't lying when he said he missed them.

the all-too-familiar smile on her face filled him with so much pride but he was disappointed that he had to see it under these circumstances.

"come in." katara said, still beaming.

a female doctor walked in, holding a clipboard as she closed the door behind her.

"are you mr. nakai?" she asked, her shoulders back and her head held high.

he took a glance at his daughter and apprehensively said, "yes. are you here to tell me what happened?"

she nodded, glancing at her notes. "you've probably gotten an idea from rumors floating through the halls, but there was a bombing at united nations university."

hakoda felt his heart drop.

he knew it happened, but to have it actually confirmed? it was terrifying.
