It was mid morning, with the sun barely over the horizon. It would have been great to wake up to, if I was woken up differently.
I was asleep, grasping my knife, (due to a badass fight scene), when a high pitched screech pierced the air. I sprang up, almost off the roof, to see a bunch of bikers. At first, I didn't know what they were doing, but I watched for a minute and I realized something terrifying. They were circling. Not just circling for the sake of it, but they had welded giant blades to the sides of their motorcycles and were running down zombies with them.
After a while of this, the streets were empty. They slowed to a stop, opened their side bags, and pulled out various guns.
By this time, I had sprinted down the whole school, shouting for everyone to get ready for a raid, just to remember something very important... My rifle.
I bolted all the way back to the roof, grabbed my rifle and slowly proceeded to pull everyone up, onto the roof. As we all readied up and sat next to each other with our guns at the ready, the leader (or so I assumed) spoke.
"We are not here to harm you... Simply to take anything of value to us." He said blatantly, showing no fear whatsoever.
At this point, Renae opened fire with her SG 550 rifle, successfully picking off almost every man. The leader just stood there, grinning. "You made the wrong choice. We will be back, with more men, and more fire power... You messed with the wrong gang." He said slowly, setting his gun back in the bag. Then he stepped back onto his bike and drove off, flipping us off."What the hell was that?!" Joseph cut Renae off before she could get off the roof. He was furious. You could always tell by how his face got red and this vein in his forehead popped out. If he wasn't ripped, it would be humorous.... Like an Oompa Loompa if it got mad. "I asked you a question!" He shouted again.
She just sat there... And started crying. I almost felt bad, until I remembered that she could have gotten us all killed... Oh yeah, can't forget that. After about five minutes, he backed away, still pissed, which left her to me. If she had a problem, one of us needed to know.
I waited next to her for a minute, letting her wipe her tears and calm down.
"So... Care to follow me into the Media Center?" I asked. I figured she would prefer to talk in private. She nodded and started leading the way into the Media Center, closing the door behind her. "Do you want to tell me what that was? If you have a problem, I'll fix it." I said as calm as I could. I did my best not to let on that I was just as mad as Joseph.
"I never told you what my last was... You know, before the virus outbreak." She started. "I was surviving with another group. We survived for a long time and joined this larger group... The leader was that guy that spoke out there. His name is Sam and he murdered my entire group."
I sat there... Stunned... I knew something had happened, but I had never guessed this. "I... I'm sorry."
"Just leave me alone for a while." She said between small, quiet sobs. In this moment, I remembered something I used to do to help cheer up my friends.
"Look at me." I said. She glanced up, then looked down again. "No, look at me." I said again, this time gently making her look up. I sat there for a second, making sure she was watching, then I slowly started to smile. She almost smiled, but it didn't work. Time to bring out the big guns! I crossed my eyes and raised one eyebrow, forcing her to burst into laughter. "Come down to the lunch room, whenever you're ready." I said. As I closed the door behind me, I started to hear an unmistakable sound.
Chains.
