It has been a long time since I have written in this journal. I guess I've been a bit busy with the sign making and the running of our little civilization. Anyway, we've had a few newcomers since putting up the sign, which means some of us don't have to work as much. I am now a sniper, as well as a leader, so I have a lot of time to talk or write while watching the streets. So as of now, you will be updated much more frequently.
It was three months since I had last written here and nothing has really changed at the school but the amount of people. We have found Jim, Fred and Andy.
Where I would like to start recalling was a warm day. I woke up, showered in the locker room, and got to my post on the roof. All I did was sit there. Hours upon hours of just sitting there, everyday. That was my job. Well today was different. I was sitting there, (like I said before) and there was a knock on the hatch. This wasn't too surprising, I was the only one who could get up very easily. I opened it and looked down on Linea, who was now shorter than me. She was just standing there with this "The hell are you waiting for?" look. This wasn't too uncommon considering it was either this look or just plain out annoyance. I haven't seen her smile in a long time. After laughing for a second, I dropped down to my knee, reached down, and pulled her up.
"What can I do for you?" I asked, resetting my rifle into position.
She brushed off a spot next to me and laid down a blanket. After laying down and facing me, she giggled a little and asked, "Do I have to have a reason to hang out with my best friend?"
I just sat there a second. I really wanted to trust her... I just didn't want to be walked on. "I really am sorry." She said finally. She was talking about her and James. They had a relationship for a while and she just kind of tossed me aside. She was still my best friend though, as was Joseph.
We sat there for a few minutes... I have no idea what we were waiting for. But after a few minutes I set down the rifle and looked over. I told her I forgive her but that she would have to show me she wants to be friends or I'll just go through the day like I did before. Then she smiled. That same smile that hits me like a train, every time.
"I like it up here." She said, "It's peaceful."
"Why do you think I took this job?" I asked her, jokingly.
"How about I become your partner? You know, the partner that just sits there and talks all day."
I nodded, but the conversation was cut short by a zombie following a limping man. I raised my rifle, lined up the crosshairs, and took the shot. My shot rung through the air like a voice in a cave. After the guy was at the gate, I lowered the gun and started twisting on my silencer. I was only allowed one shot without it because the sound would signify a living person and there was no other reason for me to shoot, otherwise.
The next day she was back... And the next... And the next. It became a daily routine, seeing as how we had nowhere better to be anyway. For once, I actually liked this apocalypse. Before, my chances with this girl would have been impossibly low. Don't get me wrong, I would have tried my best, but trying is all I could do.
The next month was all the same, talking about the most random of things, like best friends normally do at midnight. Everything was amazing.
Days went exactly like this, only to be interrupted by council meetings. After a couple of weeks, we had our big monthly meeting. Linea and I walked together to the meeting room, once there, we sat next to each other and continued talking until the meeting started.
"First order of business," I started, "Winter is approaching. Fast. We need to make sure the heater works." Everyone nodded in agreement. We were all from Northern Michigan, so we know what winter can be like. "Tomorrow, Linea and I can take a truck full of us to Kmart. We have already cleared it of zombies, but we still need to be careful." This was pretty much the entire meeting.
Linea and I started to round up people to go with us the next day. That night, we decided to sleep on the roof, staring at the stars. The next morning was just like every other morning, except she was with me the entire time. I must say it was great to have a friend by my side this whole time. A couple hours later, before we left she walked up to me and gave me a hug... This was weird because she hates contact. After a good thirty seconds, she stepped back, looked up at me. I looked down, wondering what was going on. Then I realized we hadn't left the building in a long time.
"Every time we go, I get attacked. You have saved me every time, but what if you don't?" Her eyes watered a little.
"Just stick with me... I'd sooner let myself go than you." It surprised me, but I meant it. We hugged a little longer, then we climbed down and left.
We pulled up and, as I said, it looked all clear. Boy was I wrong.
