His hair was a light ice blue, matching his eyes. His skin was glossy like a doll's with not a single imperfection. He was wearing rather cold clothes for the nightly weather. his one leg was hanging in through the window, the other still outside. He had paused, not moving a muscle, and was looking at Xingqiu with shock in his eyes.
The strange boy was visibly thinking about his next actions. He looked at the front door behind Xingqiu and saw it was closed. His eyes then darted across the room, searching. It was once he saw the shiny object in Xingqiu's hand that his face shifted from shock to worry.
The silence between them lasted what felt like an eternity. Xingqiu tried to speak, but felt his throat choke. As if petrified, he couldn't make a sound. Instead it was the strange figure that spoke first, pointing at the shiny stone in Xingqiu's hand.
"Mine."Xingqiu felt the strange pressure on his body disappear, he could move again. He did his best not to speak too loud, and to sound approachable.
"This is yours? Are you the one that stayed here?"A quick glance at the stone, then back to Xingqiu. The stranger seemed on his guard.
"Yes.""Why did you stay here? There's a town nearby, you could have gone there."
This was Xingqiu's chance to find out more. He could interrogate their unexpected guest himself! The boy shook his head.
"It's not safe there, too many people.""Where are you staying tonight?"
A sad look flashed over the boy's eyes before disappearing again.
"The forest.""Isn't that dangerous?"
Xingqiu couldn't imagine what it was like to spend an entire night in the forest by yourself. It must be terrifying. Now that he got a decent look he noticed the boy's clothes were covered in rips and tears, how long had he been living like this? The boy looked away.
"It's more dangerous for you that i'm here, than it is for me to be in the forest."Just when Xingqiu thought this development couldn't get any more interesting...
"What does that mean?"The boy shook his head again.
"No."Darn, he was losing him. If he didn't keep up the conversation this stranger would probably leave and never come back. He had to think of a way to keep him talking.
"So you're in the forest by yourself? Don't you get lonely?"The boy looked down. This time the sadness in his eyes didn't go away.
"Yes..."Xingqiu stepped closer.
"You shouldn't have to be alone."The strange boy put up his hand in warning, signalling Xingqiu to stop. He did so, not wanting to scare him away. Suddenly, an idea popped into his mind. He crouched down, putting the teardrop stone on the floor. Once that was done he got back up and walked away, leaving an equal distance between each of them and the stone.
"My name is Xingqiu. I'll be here tomorrow night too if you want some company."The boy entered the room fully, sliding his last leg in through the window. He moved carefully, with an elegance Xingqiu found quite impressive. The stranger picked up the stone as he reached it and moved back to the window at the same pace as his approach.
He stopped before leaving, taking a moment to consider. He looked at Xingqiu, pointed at himself, and spoke:
"Chongyun."And with that, he was gone. He moved so fluently through the window Xingqiu almost missed it. Within a blink the boy was indistinguishable from the forest behind him, not a trace to be found.
Xingqiu gulped audibly, realizing he'd been holding his breath. This had to be the most exciting mystery he'd ever encountered, how was he supposed to sleep now? Shit, sleep. He snuck his way back out the window and followed his route in reverse, making sure not to make a sound. The door to the camper dorm was still ajar, suggesting his nighttime adventure had gone unnoticed.
The five girls were still sleeping, making it easy for Xingqiu to reach his bed. Bottom bunk, a genius idea. He got under the covers, only now realizing how cold he'd been. The excitement had delayed the experience of nightime air. His blanket embraced him, letting him know he wouldn't have to feel it much longer.
A solid hour later he hadn't gotten a second of sleep. He kept tossing and turning, hoping to find a position that would send him away to dreamland. No luck. He finally gave up and took his notebook. Before he'd realized it, he'd written a name he would not soon forget: Chongyun.
Who was this mysterious boy? For him to have lived here by himself and survived, and now in the forest too, he must be quite special. The way he moved suggested he wasn't used to human interaction, yet he didn't run either. He was desperate for a friend, even if he knew it was a risk.
His notes were intentionally vague, making it read like a character he'd made up rather than a person he'd met. Xingqiu didn't want anyone to read his notes and figure out what he'd been up to. After a description of Chongyun's appearance and behavior, he sketched the charm. A black teardrop shape with a white dot in the middle. He'd finally realized what it reminded him of, it was Yin. Yin and Yang, a Chinese philosophical concept explaining how opposites are complimentary. The completed symbol represents balance. For Chongyun to only hold one half, its must be a balancing charm. A Yin to match what must thus be his natural Yang. Xingqiu patted himself on the back for this realization, knowing how Chongyun saw himself could reveal great details of his life and his motivations.
Xingqiu yawned, it was getting way too late for this. If he didn't sleep soon he was seriously going to regret it tomorrow. Fine. He finished his last notes and put his notebook to the side. He sighed audiably, accepting defeat. Now that his thoughts were on paper his mind could rest. Sleep came for him quietly, he dreamt of the stranger with light blue hair.
