Chapter 19 Key

Her screaming is so loud that it echoes in my head as I feel myself wavering on my feet. Finally, she stops and I groan in annoyance. "What was that for ?!" I ask her with an angry look.

The girl calms down before she suddenly gets up from the floor with a determined face, the guard at the door starts to make a move inside but I stop him a sign of my hand. Topaz has her fists clenched in such a manner it makes me smirk.

"You ! I've been in this room which is more like a jail for I don't know how many days !"

I widen my eyes at her behaviour, she obviously knows who I am and yet she acts like a wild animal in front of me which leaves me stunned.

"I barely have anything to eat, almost no light because you even barricaded those stupid windows and I just want to leave this damned place!"

I gather myself at her outburst and just laughs right at her face, the poor thing, who thinks she can just ask me to make her leave from here, if she thinks I pity her then you can't be more wrong than that. I get closer to her with a grin and she starts to walk down until she reaches the wall and closes her eyes while my hand strokes her face in a fake gentle manner.

"So beautiful and fierce, almost indomitable, you remind me of me when I was a younger girl. My mum died by giving me birth and I was raised by a violent and alcoholic father. He used to beat me when he felt like it with his belt. And then one night I decided to run away and never look back. I was 16 years old when I entered that military base, the colonel saw me and I explained everything to him, about my life, my dad. He accepted me in his home with his wife. And it felt like I had parents again, I joined the army at just 18 because I always knew deep down I will become a leader one day and look at me now, can't say that I'm wrong."

As I finish my sentence, I take a lighter in my pocket and light a smoke while I take a drag. Topaz is finally looking in my eyes with a look I couldn't decipher properly, she exhales and finally speaks : "I'm sorry about your past but this is not a reason to act like you do today ! And I'm not like you, I would never be you ! I know why I'm here, I'm not a fool, I'm just a guarantee for you ! Just to take advantage against my father but your plan will not work that I'm sure of it !" she replied forcefully while keeping eye contact.

To say that I didn't like her tone of voice was an understatement, I felt my blood boil in my head despite my usually calm attitude, she was literally taunting me as a prisoner. I wonder how bold can you be to do that ? I punch the wall right beside Topaz's head with my jaw clenched like never before. Blood was oozing from my knuckles, but I didn't care, the girl surprised and shocked by my actions literally freeze in place like a statue and I crush my cigarette on the ground with my foot all the while looking at her.

"You're lucky you're somewhat useful to me you know little girl! Otherwise you would not be a part of this world anymore! I don't have any time to waste with you but if you think you can escape like you want, just wait and see!"

I storm out of the room while the guard, seeing all of this simply look down and moves away to let me leave the room. I stop in my tracks and point my finger to him. "You ! Make sure she doesn't eat tonight, she doesn't deserve it."

"Yes boss, where are you heading?" He asks with concern in his voice.

"I'm gonna practice my shooting, and you keep an eye on her, understood ?"

He nods and closes the door, before shaking his head while looking at Topaz.

I slowly wake up to the sound of Aida making weird noises with her mouth, she has her arm wrapped around my waist and she's like mumbling incoherent things in her sleep which brings a smile to my face at how cute she can be right now. Yesterday was not an easy day, to say the least, we talked a lot after her confessions, and I listened to everything she had to say carefully. She apologised again and promised me to never hide anything from me in the future, I was really grateful I decide to bring a hand on her face while I gently stroke her hair cascading on her cheek while pecking her nose.

She groans and scrunches her nose with the back of her hand while I giggle and say. "Good morning sleepy head."

She yawns and replies with a tired voice. "Good morning, I need more sleep damn."

I chuckle. "We didn't have sex for once and you're tired ?"

She laughs and opens her eyes. "Well, we still talked for I don't know how much time and it was exhausting. But I have to get up, we need to focus because it's only a matter of time before they head in our direction."

I sigh and look at the ceiling. Today could be that day I feared the most, us being discovered and having to fight for our lives, we don't have a lot of options, sure we could take my car and just leave as far as possible, but where ? And besides, Aida really wants to save that girl named Topaz, she told me more about her when she was in charge of watching her in her former clan, she was dreaming of being free. Aida and her had a lot of talks at night when no one could suspect anything, she even brought her more food to help her and they became good friends. This is Topaz that convinced Aida to go away and live her life freely far from this damn town I used to call home. But Aida also promised to that girl she would come back to get her. A part of me was scared that Rosaline might find out something and questions her about Aida and her plans. I just hope that my love is right when she says this girl is really something else and will never let her down... Well, in that case let us down because if it doesn't work we can consider ourselves buried in the ground.

I feel Aida's lips on my cheeks and she taps on my shoulders. "Come on, let's get up and eat something." I nod when suddenly we hear a loud cracking noise in the house. It was the wind!

I quickly get up and get to the bedroom window and right before my eyes I see the most spectacular snowstorm that I have ever seen. Snowflakes stick to the glass and I start to giggle as Aida is by my side furrowing her brows.

"Why do you find that funny ?"

I turn my head to look at her and simply say. "Well, if their plan were to find us today, good luck for them, we can't see anything from afar, that's good for us, it should leave us a bit more of time."

Aida hums. "Yes, you're probably right honey but I told you they have cars, they will not come her on foot, that's for sure so as soon as the weather gets better, we will only have a few hours left before the turning point of our lives..."
