“I’ll do what is necessary to be the best king I can.”
The priest walked in and smiled at the two. His teeth yellowing and his hair long gone. When he walked he was slightly hunched over, no matter how hard he tried to stand straight. “Prince Onyx Silsworth, you need a bride.”
Onyx stared blankly at him before clearing his throat. “I-I beg your pardon?”
“You see son, the priest and I agreed that it is best that you marry before you become king.”
‘Why? Why is it needed? I’m still young.”
“It has nothing to do with that. You need a child to take over when you die, like what you will be doing for me. It is up to you to keep the royal bloodline protecting this kingdom.”
Onyx stood and slammed his hands on the table. “So you're just gonna have me marry some girl I don’t know?! I want to marry for love father!”
Tatsuno straightened and watched with widened eyes. ‘This can’t end well,’ he thought to himself.
“Don’t you raise you voice at me boy!” The king went to stand put fell back down on his chair, coughing into his rag. “Love doesn’t matter when it comes to the royal family.”
“What about mother? Didn’t you love her!” The whole room went quiet at those lines. The queen died of sickness when Onyx was only a child. She was the kindest queen the kingdom has ever had. Her smile always brightened a room and people noticed.
“Don’t bring her name into this son,” The king whispered.
Onyx took a deep breath and sat down. “Are you telling me you never felt anything for her?” He said gently.
The king looked at him with eyes filled with grief. “Of course I did, I still do.” He smiled weakly and huffed a laugh. “You remind me so much of her. That fire in your eyes and voice.”
“But that isn’t what we are here for,” The priest butted in. “It is your duty as the future king to marry and have children to pass the crown down to. I have made arrangements for a contest that the fairest maidens all around to join in hopes of winning your hand in marriage.”
Onyx shook his head. “You can’t be serious.”
“Oh I’m very serious. The contest is in a week's time. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have more planning to do.” The priest bowed then left the room.
Onyx sighed and stood up. “I’m turning in for the night.” He then walked to the door where Tatsuno was waiting.
“Shall I escort you to your quarters?” Tatsuno said.
“Yes, thank you.”
Tatsuno nodded and walked with Onyx to his room in silence. He opened the door for him and stepped aside. Onyx walked in and plopped down on his bed with a sigh. Tatsuno walked in and stood by the door. “Your highness, I couldn’t help but hear the conversation with the king and royal priest. Is there something you would like me to do about it?”
Onyx opened his mouth to say no but stopped when an idea came into mind. He sat straight up and looked him over. “Ok I have an idea, it may sound crazy but hear me out.”
Tatsuno straightened and nodded. “I’m listening.”
Onyx smiled mischievously. “How do you feel about entering that contest?”
