"so how have you been?" finn asked the y/h/c woman who was sitting across the table from him, pouring a bit of sugar into her coffee. (tbh if you drink coffee without sugar you're fucking weird cus that shit is nasty) y/n smiled, tossing the now empty sugar packet onto the table. "i've been great! although i must admit i was a bit confused when you asked to grabbed coffee" she raised an eyebrow at him as she stirred the sugar into her coffee with the small straw.
finn shrugged, taking a sip of his own coffee before placing it back down onto the table. "it's been like what? 6 years since we've spoken? 10 since we've actually seen each other in person, figured it was about time" he smiled at her, causing her stomach to do flips. "e-even after everything that happened i never formally apologized to yo- finn you don't have to apologize to me about something that happened when we were both stupid teenagers" y/n cut him off, slightly chuckling. finn chuckled along with her before clearing his throat.
"yeah yeah, no i get that but i broke up with you.. through text.. and i just wanted to- i accept your apology but that was 10 years ago. trust me, i'm not worried about it" she giggled, placing her hands under the table and onto her lap. finn let out a huff of air before picking his coffee back up and taking another sip. their table went silent and for a few seconds all that was heard was the chatters of nearby people and the honks of passing cars before she spoke up again. "so how are things going with you?" she questioned, leaning back in her seat with her arms crossed.
finn chuckled, "you must've heard about my divorce then?" he asked and y/n's eyes widened. she did not hear about it. "oh my- i had no idea finn, i'm so sorry" she apologetically said, reaching one of her hands across the table and placing it atop of his. and there it was. that same feeling both of them felt years ago, it had never faded.
finn smiled, "no it's fine, i'm the one who initiated it. something just wasn't right" he said like it was nothing taking y/n by surprise. he cleared his throat again after y/n finally pulled her hand away from his, "so how is your daughter? ariel i think it was?" he questioned as he leaned forward, his arms now propping himself up on the table. y/n smiled at the thought of her five year old who was currently at her dad's house. y/n and ariel's father, eli, dated years back but he was a continuous cheater so she decided for the sake of her and her baby, she would leave him. so she did. that didn't stop him from fighting for custody though.
"she's great actually, just started kindergarten this year and is already doing really well" finn watched her smile brighten as she talked about ariel. he always knew she would make a great mother, and she did. "she might even have a crush on you" y/n laughed. "oh really?" finn cackled, slightly tossing his head back. y/n nodded her head as she took a final sip of her coffee, "yeah! she said you have nice hair and eyes and that it makes you so pretty"
he didn't know if it was the coffee giving him enough energy to say what he said next or if it was just the look in her eye, but what he asked made y/n choke on air.
"does her mom think it makes me look pretty?"
y/n was taken aback by finn's question. she so badly wanted to scream yes and let him know that he is undoubtedly attractive. but on the other hand, she thought that maybe he was just joking. he's always been one to joke around.
but you only live once right?
"yeah. she does" she smiled causing finn to smirk, definitely feeding into his ego. "cool. maybe her mom should something about i- uh finn?" y/n cut him off from finishing his sentence. she wasn't looking at him anymore, she was looking directly behind him. confused and following her gaze, he turned his head back the slightest to see two black vans.
paparazzi.
now normally this wouldn't be such a big deal. maybe it was just two old friends catching up with each other. but this is what happens when you catch up with an old friend you used to date and had a public break up with. "well this is gonna be in the tabloids" finn joked, turning around to look back at y/n who was clearly nervous. finn's smile faded at the sight of her hands shaking, "hey are you okay?" he asked. "yeah yeah i'm fine i just get nervous when it comes to paparazzi nowadays. it's nothing i promise" she flashed a genuine smile before looking down at her phone, seeing it was 9:34am. "oh shit uh- i have to go pick ariel up from eli's. sorry to cut this short but maybe we can finish this another day?" she asked as she started stuffing her phone into her purse and standing up. finn's face fell, he didn't want her to leave. he wanted to continue to talk and laugh with her. but nonetheless, her child comes first.
he mocked her steps, also standing up in front of her. "yeah sure just let me know when?" she nodded in return, swinging her purse onto her shoulder. "it was nice seeing you" she gave him a quick hug before starting to walk off. finn stared at her figure that was barely few away from their table now before cupping his mouth with his hands,
"hey y/n!" he yelled, earning a few stares from random people and making her twirl her body around to face him again. "does ariel think i'm pretty enough to let me take her mom out on a date?" he shouted. y/n felt her cheeks heat up at his question, taking a moment to think before shouting back at him. "i don't know! meet me at the new restaurant on sunset boulevard and i'll give you the answer!" she shouted back before turning around and walking away again.
finn smiled the brightest he has in a very long time. he watched her figure as it disappeared into a small crowed of people. looking around, he was met with the glares of complete strangers, silently scolding him for being so damn loud.
