song: heather by conan gray

"COME ON Y/NN JUST PLAY IT FOR US" finn begged, dragging out the last letter of his best friend's name. the girl looked over to see mary, eric, nick and cole all agreeing with him eagerly. "FINE DUDE WHATEVER... BUT I NEED YOUR GUITAR" she yelled back.

finn jumped up from his place on the couch and cheered in victory before he ran up to his room and retrieved the brown acoustic guitar. not even thirty second had passed and he was already running back down stairs and handing it to her. she took in a deep breath and starter strumming and softly singing. finn then laid down on the sofa enjoying the moment.

as she was singing, everyone was enjoying the sound of her soft tone and sweet voice. however, there was one person in particular who was paying attention to the meaning of the words.

finn's mom, mary.

she had always suspected y/n had a slight crush on her son and hoped that they could both learn to see it too. and by the lyrics in this song, y/n has. but finn? not so much. she'd always tease him about y/n, even from a young age and he'd just simply reply back with an 'no mom, she's my bestie' and leave the conversation at that.

whilst singing, y/n couldn't help but think back to all the memories she'd had with finn. from the day they first met, the endless flights from country to country just to be around each other, all the way to that night of december third.

it was particularly cold outside and finn had practically begged her to tag along with him to a party at their friend cole's house. it was a small gathering, not very large just close friends. they partied for three hours and as the night grew, so did the temperature.

"here" finn softly spoke. y/n looked down at his hands to see his yellow sweater that was once protecting him from the cold, ready to be worn by her instead. the girl shook her head with a small smile and declined his offer but he ignored her, placing the sweater opening a over her head and pulling it down.

she rolled her eyes and scoffed at the boy. "finn seriously i'm not- oh please you're about to freeze to death just take it" he cut her off as he slid her arms through the correct holes of the sweater. it was quite lengthy on her being that finn is a very tall person and she is shorter than him, (seriously just go with it) it looked like a dress on her.

that was the night y/n thought he might've felt the same way about her as she did him. key word: thought. that all changed when a week later finn came home and announced that he had someone important he wanted to meet his family. including y/n.

and lo and behold grace walked through the door of the wolfhard residence. finn smiled almost immediately as their eyes locked, motioning for her to join him by his side in front of his loved ones. "this is grace" he paused, looking at each individual, "my girlfriend" y/n would never forget the bright smile was plastered on his face at the word girlfriend. she thought about it almost everyday.

to say she was beautiful was an understatement. to y/n, she was gorgeous and everything she wasn't. it went on like this for a few months, grace would usually take y/n's place at the wolfhard's dinner table, grace would take y/n's spot by finn on the couch and other 'spots' all around the house that would usually be occupied by y/n, we're now occupied by grace. it had been months since y/n and finn had actually hung out together. grace didn't really appreciate the close friendship they had and spent every awaking second she could with finn.

today however, grace was needed in south carolina for her family reunion which meant it would was the first time in months y/n and finn have spent time together. they spent hours just chatting about how much things have changed recently and how y/n never really comes around anymore. she couldn't bring herself to tell finn the real reason she wouldn't come around so she lied and blamed it on school.

now, everyone was gathered around listening as y/n finished up her song. "wish i were .." loud and obnoxious claps came from cole and finn as they hooted and hollered which earned them a scold from mary for being too loud. the older woman stood up and grabbed her wine glass that sat on the table. "y/n would you like to help me make dinner?" mary asked. y/n smiled and nodded as she placed the guitar gently onto the couch and following mary into the kitchen.

there was a comfortable silence between the two as they prepared the meal with the exception of mary directing y/n on how to correctly cut the tomatoes. "y/n?" the sound of mary's voice stole the girl from her previous thoughts. "hm?" she hummed in response. mary took a breath before speaking again. "is that song you wrote about finn?" y/n felt her breath get caught in her throat at the question which caused her to cough.

mary look at her suspiciously and chuckled. "i take that as a yes" her actions cutting the onions never faltering. y/n cleared her throat as she continued to chop the tomatoes into smaller pieces, "what .. what makes you think that?" she asked. mary hummed, taking the small pieces of onions and placing them into a salad bowl. "well" she started, "i'm not blind and i can see that you love him" she explained.

y/n furrowed her eyebrows "yeah he's my best friend, of course i love him" she slyly chuckled almost as if she was trying to convince herself and not the boy's mother. "mhm" mary smiled. "true true. that's true and all but i know that look. that look of love is hard to miss. especially if you know what it looks like"

y/n didn't know why but she felt the need to cry. she's never admitted her feelings out loud, it was all new to her. so that's what she did. she cried. at first mary thought she missed it but as she heard another sniffle, she knew what it was. gently wiping her hands off with a towel, she made her way over to y/n whose hands were now placed over their face. mary gently grabbed her hands and held them. "it's okay" she reassured her. the woman pulled the smaller girl in for a hug, holding her there.

"it'll be okay. i know him better than he does himself and i can promise you, he loves you. you." she spoke as one of her hands soothingly ran through y/n's hair. y/n continued her small cries into mary's shoulder for the next five minutes until they finally pulled away. they both smiled at each other and mary gently held y/n's cheek with her hand. "let's finish shall we?" she asked. y/n chuckled and nodded before they stepped away from each other and engrossed into a different conversation.

but little did they know that finn was there. and he saw the whole thing.
