When I wake up I'm on the couch in the living room. For one split second I think that this was all a dream but when I reach for my head I can still feel the pain from where he hit me.
I pull the covers off and sit up. "I was wondering when you'd wake up." Charlie says from across the room. He standing by the kitchen, the only thing illuminating him is the light from the refrigerator.
I smile at him but he doesn't smile back. A hollow feeling overtakes me, I know he's mad about the bargain I made. He closes the refrigerator and turns on the light in the living room.
"I don't think you're taking your Luna responsibilities seriously." He says sternly.
I let annoyance make its way into my tone, "Are you kidding me? I just saved your life!"
"I would have rather died with honor, than having to fix your mistakes!" He says, lacing his words with a venom I never knew he would use on me.
"Why are you getting so angry?" I ask quietly, his accusatory tone makes me want to go back in time to the moment I said yes.
"Because not only have you given about a quarter of our land to a group of mutts, you have sent out a sign of weakness to the other packs. Potential threats, enemies!" I can't believe I just saved this asshole's life and all I get for it is backlash?
"I'm sorry that I didn't want to watch you get tortured until you die!" I fire back, letting the anger seep into my voice.
"You know what? Is probably for the best that this happened." He says finally. I raise my eyebrows in confusion, "Even if I were tortured in front of you, when the time would come to avenge me, you wouldn't do it. You know why? Because you're weak." He practically spits out the last words.
My heart stops when I realize he's just called me weak. I try to muster as much courage as I can in my voice but instead it comes out small and frail. "So you think I'm weak?"
He throws himself onto the couch beside me. His face remains stoic, "I can't have a weak mate. I refuse to have a weak mate."
I start hyperventilating at his words, because this can't be happening. He's not going to say what I think he's going to say. "I reject you as my mate."
My insides burst and I stand up too quickly. "You're rejecting me?!" My voice is growing shrill and I mentally wince.
"Don't try to stand up too fast, I know you go-" He stands up also, and gets hold of my arm. Seeing the worry in his eyes comforts me slightly but not enough.
Anger builds inside of me and I lash out. "Don't tell me what to do." I hiss sharply. I rip my arm from his grip and leave through the sliding doors in the kitchen, leading into our big backyard.
Tears are stinging at the corner of my eyes but I blink them back, crying is something someone weak would do. I am not weak. I start running but still hear Charlie calling after me. I run faster into the woods, I start getting tired so I shift into wolf form, not caring that my clothes rip in the process.
It's very dark out here but I use that to hide me when I reach the woods. I still hear Charlie calling after me but I ignore him and keep walking, staying in my wolf form. I venture deeper into the woods until I'm pretty sure I'm lost. I would rather be lost then be back there. Darkness begins to consume me and I stay still listening for any sounds of life.
The woods seem to come alive with rushing water from a nearby stream, critters and animals scampering through the forest back to where they belong. I don't feel the same sense of belonging anymore. I let the symphony of nature lull me to sleep.

The next morning I wake up with an arm wrapped around me. I am in bed with Charlie. I stiffen under his touch after I remember what happened last night. How could he have his arm around me after what he said to me last night. "Promise me you'll never do that again." He says suddenly.
HIs protectiveness angers me. "I'm not your mate anymore, so why should you give a fuck about what I do?" I say letting the venom work its way into my tone. He flinches slightly and moves his hand from my waist.
He sighs heavily, like I have just hurt him. "Just because I rejected you, doesn't mean I stopped loving you."
I won't let him play the victim card. He doesn't love me, if he did he wouldn't have spoken to me the way he did last night. I get up abruptly and say," Are you sure? Because I'm pretty sure that's what you mean when you reject your mate." I storm out of the room before he has a chance to respond.
For the rest of the day I stay with Charlotte in her room. She presses me about what happened and I finally give in. She pities me, I can tell.
I go to use the bathroom when I see Maya trying to sneak out of Charlie's room. Her face turns red when she sees me. Her reaction confirms my suspicions, he's done with me.
