Gabrielle's POV

Each night we snuck away to go back to our new spot at the water tank. When we sit on the ledge, it feels like we're the only people in the world. I wish that was the case.

"I wanna give you something," Jack says. I look at him and he gives me a kiss on the forehead. He hands me an unfamiliar, white box. I furrow my eyebrows at him. He raises his in response. As my eyes are on Jack I can't help but notice the vein slightly popping out of his neck. His cheeks are red and I admire the tiny wrinkles that frame his mouth and run up to his nose when he smiles. There's a tiny light shining in his brown eyes as he stares back at me.

I slowly take the top of the box off. My eyes widen at the sight of what lies in the box. It's a rounded-edge, rectangular, white piece of technology. I can see my reflection in the black screen. I look up at Jack, wide eyed.

"Turn it on," Jack encourages. I take the iPhone 6 out of the box and then click the power button. Big black letters appear on the screen. It takes me a while to realize what it says because of the loopy font. But once I make out the word I gasp.

Prom?

I cover my mouth. I look back up at him.

"Yes!" I throw my arms around Jack while holding onto the new phone for dear life. "But, why'd you spend this much money on me? I don't deserve this." I begin to hand him back the phone.

"You deserve it Gabrielle," Jack says as he takes the phone and then places it back on my lap. "You deserve everything in the world."

When I was a little girl, I never fantasized about my Prom. Not even in middle school. But now that I've been asked to go to Prom, I begin to instantly fantasize about dancing with Jack and wearing a beautiful dress, taking Prom pictures and just having an amazing night.

Jack's two sisters, Laura and Molly came home for the week before and during prom. They're both really nice and Jack seems so happy when he's around them.

"So has Jack been a good boyfriend to you?" Laura asks teasingly in front of Jack. I giggle and Jack chimes in.

"Yes, he has," he interrupts. I laugh again and then nod. "I gave her a phone as a pronposal. I'm pretty amazing," Jack teases.

"Wait! You guys are going to prom together?" Molly asks from the other side of the room. Jack and I both nod.

"Have you gotten your prom dress yet, Gabrielle?" Laura asks, her eyes as wide as her own head. Shoot, I forgot about that.

"Can we go dress shopping with you?" Molly asks excitingly. I guess that won't hurt.

"S-sure," I say calmly.

"It's been so long since we've gone shopping for something like this," Laura says.

Ten minutes later, we're off prom dress hunting. I'm not looking for anything in particular. Laura and Molly are making such a big deal out of this.

"Jack must really like you," Molly says from behind the wheel.

"W-what?" I ask confused.

"When Jack was in middle school, he vowed to never go to prom because he thinks it's useless. You know, going to some over-exaggerated dance with someone he probably won't ever see again after high school," Laura interrupts. "But obviously he was wrong because prom is an amazing night that you'll never forget." I used to think of prom like that too. I still kind of think of it like that. Just a bit less because I'm going with Jack.

"So what color are you going for?" Molly asks as we walk into a small store. The dresses range from over the top, bright orange to dark, short, simple, black dress. I almost point to that one but I know that black isn't necessarily a prom color. Instead, I shrug and follow them to the back of the store.

"Oooh! What about this?" Molly asks, showing me a bright pink, strapless dress. I shake my head.

"I-I like m-more dark colors-s," I say. Molly and Laura show me about 10 more dresses, My eyes fall on a lonesome dress in the corner of the shop. It's on a headless manican. The dress is dark blue, simple and strapless. The top half looks like someone swirled the fabric and the bottom is super simple.

"Do you like that?" Laura asks walking over to it. I nod vigorously. She asks a worker for two sizes and then I go to try it on.

I look in the mirror once I get the dress on. I see my collar bones and the awkward spots where the dress is too big around my torso. My legs look like sticks and my neck is pale. For the first time in forever, I don't hate what I see. In this dress you can see the scars on my arms and a bit on my thighs. That doesn't bother me this time. The dress is so beautiful, it seems like it overpowers my scars. I smile back at my reflection.

"You look amazing!" Molly and Laura say in unison.

"R-Really?" I ask spinning around slowly.

As of now, I feel genuinely happy. I'm excited for prom and I'm even more excited to be with Jack. I'm finally beginning to accept myself and everything around me. I just never want this feeling to end.
