Chapter 8

Gabrielle's POV

I wake up to the sound of sneakers scuffing the floor outside of the door. School must be starting. I brush my fingers through my messy chestnut hair and flatten it a bit.

Once I don't hear anymore footsteps in the hallway, I step out of the janitor's closet. I walk into homeroom and sit in my usual seat. I wonder when Jack will realize that I'm not home. Everyone comes into homeroom one by one. Jack was the last one in. We make awkward eye contact. He walks over to me and asks me where I was. I shake my head. He looks a little hungover if you ask me. Maybe he shouldn't have been out partying last night. I scribble something down onto a pieces of lined paper.

I walked here early.

"Oh okay. Tell me next time would you?" I nod and then he walks away to find Kate. She stares at me in disgust as she kisses Jack.

When lunch comes around, I decide to actually go to the cafeteria. I don't exactly know why but I do. Hayes takes a seat across from me. He tries to talk to me again but all I do is nod, roll my eyes and shake my head. He's starting to get less annoying because he's asking yes or no questions now. But I still don't like him.

With 10 minutes left in lunch, Kate walks over to me and Hayes. She totally ignores him sitting there and looks straight at me.

"I saw you last night," she starts. "Do both of your parents abuse you or just your dad?" She says it in a bitchy tone, which means she's going to use it to insult me. I thought she was drunk. I didn't think she would remember that.

"I hope it's both because you deserve that you little skank." I've learned to just tune whatever Kate says out. But these words are something I can't just ignore. Hayes stands up and towers over Kate. I want to tell him that it's okay but I can't. I can tell he's holding much of his anger inside.

"Just stop Kate. We all know you're a little bitch. So now you can just go away and feel good about yourself for hurting other people. Okay? Okay."

Kate stares at Hayes for a few deadly seconds before walking away. Hayes sits down breathing in and out heavily. I look into his blue eyes and shoot him a slight smile, thanking him for what he just did.

"Was what she said uh... true?" Hayes asks after he calms down a bit. I debate whether I should tell him or not. The bell rings before I make my disicion and I leave before I tell him anything.

I decide to walk home early from 8th period. I ask to go to the bathroom and leave school.

I get home and go into my room. The broken beer bottle is still in the middle of my floor. I decide to pick it up and put it in the neighbors' trash. I cut myself a few times but I'm used to it.

The next day I over sleep. I change into a purple tanktop and shortened black leggings. I throw my hair up into a messy bun and then climb out of my window. When I go to the corner of the street I see Jack's car still sitting there. I look in the window at my reflection to make sure I don't look like a conplete wreck. Then, I realize that Jack's asleep in the driver's seat. I get into the passenger's seat and he snaps awake. Without either of us saying a word, he begins to drive. He offers me a cigarette and I take it. I wonder if Kate told Jack about my dad hurting me on Sunday. Everyone still whispers about me showing up to school with Jack. I've gotten used to it though.

As I'm walking through the hallways, I see Hayes, fire in his eyes and anger in his heart. He pinned Amber against the lockers. Everyone is staring including Kate. I feel bad for him. I can tell he can't control this kind of anger.

At lunch Hayes sits across from me once again. I make no sign of his presence, as usual. Why isn't he talking to me? I know he feels bad about almost hurting Amber this morning but it's not like I'm going to judge. I'm the last person to judge a person like him.

Jack's POV

I watch Kate walk over to Hayes after Gabrielle leaves the cafeteria.

"...so sit your stupid ass down!" That's it. Hayes is going to end up hurting someone.

"Don't talk to my girlfriend that way!" I shove him back into his seat at his table. Next thing I know Hayes punches me in the nose. Hard. My nose starts to bleed and then he punches me again. My vision goes blurry for a few seconds but then the principal takes us into his office. We wait for Hayes's mom to show up.

1 week of suspension for Hayes. I'm trying so hard not to laugh. I wonder what his probation officer will say to him.
