"Herrera? Miller? Do you copy?" I said into my radio, but I got no response. "Do either of you copy?" I repeated, shouting this time.
Still nothing.
Everyone had stopped what they were doing, and were waiting to see if anyone was going to walk out that warehouse alive.
"Was anyone from 88 in there when the explosion happened?" I asked, turning to one of their lieutenants.
"Um... I think so. Captain Ripley and Lieutenant Sullivan," he told me.
"Damn it," I muttered under my breath. It had been at least a minute since the explosion, and there still hadn't been any movement.
Only a few seconds after I thought that, the door swung open, and even more smoke billowed around it. Dean and Captain Ripley from 88 came stumbling out, coughing from the smoke they'd inhaled. I ran over to them, and so did everyone that was working on both aid cars.
"Are you two okay? How close were you to the explosion?" I asked.
"We're fine, we were near the exit when the explosion happened so we didn't get as much of the impact," Ripley said, pushing away someone who was trying to give him an oxygen mask.
"Take the damn mask. You too Miller. Why were you two even partnered up anyway? Where's Herrera and Sullivan?" I asked.
"Well all four of us grouped up, but those two worked so well together, plus there was a lot of ground to cover, so we split into different partners," Dean explained.
I looked over to where Chief Dixon was stood talking to the press and rolled my eyes. He was supposed to be the one giving orders right now, but he clearly wasn't going to, so I decided to step up.
"Okay. Ripley, Miller, you go and get checked out on the aid car. The rest of 19, we're going in. The rest of 88, stay out here and get the hoses ready. As soon as we are all out, hit it from the outside. Everyone good with that?" I said, and everyone nodded, even Ripley.
"19, remember, stick together. Me and Gibson, Montgomery and Dixon, Hughes and Warren. Let's go," I shouted, and we all headed inside.
Me and Jack were digging through a pile of rubble when we heard Vic calling out.
"Guys over here, we found Sullivan," she shouted, and we ran to her by following the sound of her voice.
Sure enough, he was there, unconscious beneath a huge piece of rubble that Vic and Ben were pulling off of him.
"Warren, Gibson, Montgomery, you get him out. Dixon, Hughes, you two stay with me and find Andy. She would've been with him, so depending on how far the explosion threw her, she should be near here somewhere," I said.
Ben, Jack and Travis lifted Sullivan between them, and headed out of the building. I didn't get a good look at his injuries, but I knew that they would be bad, and that Andy's will be too when we find her.
Vic, Emmett and I started to search, and soon enough I saw the fabric of Andy's turnouts poking out from under a pile of rubble.
"I've found her! Come and help me move this rubble," I shouted, and the other two came rushing over.
There was a lot of rubble on top of her, more than there had been on Sullivan, so it took us a while to remove it all. When we did, we saw a pool of blood underneath her body, and knew that we had to move fast.
"Let's get her out of here, now," Vic said, and we all lifted Andy up. As we carried her towards the exit, I tried not to look back at the trail of blood following us, a reminder that Andy was loosing it, fast. There was no telling how much time she had left.
As we finally got out of the warehouse, the medics from 88 came running over, and took Andy into the aid car.
"They've taken Robert to Grey Sloan, and they're taking Herrera there too. Get 19 to meet them there, I'll get 88 to go too," Ripley said, as he walked over to me. I'm guessing him and Dean had both been checked out because they looked fine.
"Got it Captain, will do," I said.
"You okay Hughes?" I heard him say, putting a hand on Vic's shoulder.
"Uh, yes sir. I just hope they both make it, that's all," she answered.
"So do I," he said, and I silently agreed.Lucas' pov
We were all sat in the waiting room at Grey Sloan, hoping that the doctors would come and give us an update on Robert and Andy.
Robert is my best friend, and I'd met Andy a few times over the months, nearly a year, that they've been dating.
I happened to look up, and see two young girls walking by with their parents, which made me think of Gabby. Nobody has told her what had happened yet, and I knew that she needed to know.
Stressing, I stood up, and started to pace down an empty corridor. Only a few moments later, the door opened, so I turned to see who it was. I saw Hughes, a firefighter from Station 19, who was friends with Andy.
"How are you holding up?" She asked, sitting down on a chair that was pushed up against the wall. I sat down in the one next to it and leant backwards. Usually, I don't talk to people I've just met this easily, but for some reason, I just felt comfortable around Hughes, like I'd known her for years.
"Not great. I can't stop thinking about Gabby. She's already lost her Mom, she can't loose her dad too. And she can't loose Andy either, you've probably seen how close they are," I sighed.
"Yeah, I have. Has anyone told her yet?" Hughes asked, and I shook my head.
"No, I was planning on going now and getting her from her friends house so I could tell her," I said.
"I'll come too. You're too worked up to drive," she said.
"Are you sure? You don't have to, I'd understand if you wanted to stay here in case there's an update on Andy," I said.
"I'm sure. And I don't think I can take anymore waiting, it's driving me crazy not being able to do anything to help her, to help them," Hughes insisted, and I nodded in agreement. I glanced over and saw that she was silently crying, tears streaming down her face. Without thinking, I reached over and brushed them away with my thumb.
For a moment, we looked at each other. Then, we both leant in at the same time, and closed the space between us. The kiss lasted only a few seconds, because we heard the door opening, and sprung apart. I looked behind me to see one of the interns standing there awkwardly.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt. Um... I'm Dr Schmitt, I've been sent to give updates on Herrera and Sullivan. They are both still in surgery, and probably will be for a few more hours at least. Unfortunately, we don't know anything else yet," he said, and I mentally rolled my eyes. What was the point in updating us if there was nothing to update us on?
As if she could read my mind, Hughes put her hand on top of mine to calm me down, and somehow, it worked.
"Thank you," she said, and the intern nodded, and then walked out, leaving us alone again.
"You ready to go Hughes? If you still want to, like I said you don't have to, but I guess the company would be nice," I said.
"You can call me Vic. And yes, I'm ready," she smiled at me.
"Okay then. And you can call me Lucas," I replied, and we both stood up and headed back to the waiting room to tell the others where we were going.
"Hey we're going to get Gabby and bring her here," Vic told them, and they all nodded and agreed to call one of us if there were any updates.
We got into Vic's car, and drove without talking, except for me giving her directions . After a while, I decided to break the silence.
"So, what happened earlier..." I said nervously.
"Do you want it to happen again?" Vic asked, and I could see the corners of her lips curling up into a small smile.
"Yes, I do want it to happen again. Do you?" I responded, also smiling slightly.
"Yes," she agreed.
"Do you want to come over to my place tonight? After Robert and Andy are out of surgery of course," I asked her.
"I'd love to," she said, and we smiled at each other.
Not long after, we pulled up at Gabby's friends house, and got out the car. Before we walked up the drive to the front door, I grabbed hold of Vic's wrist, enough to stop her from walking away, but lightly enough that it wouldn't hurt her.
Gently, I pulled her towards me and kissed her, and she kissed me back. After a few seconds we both pulled away, and, smiling, walked over and knocked on the door.
A few seconds later, it opened, showing both of Megan's parents.
"Hi, I'm Lucas, Robert's friend, I think we met once before, and this is Vic, Andy's friend," I introduced us and they welcomed us inside.
"We can't stay actually, we just came to pick Gabby up, something's happened at..." I started saying, but I got interrupted by Gabby and Molly running into the room.
"Uncle Luke! Vic!" Gabby shouted excitedly, hugging both of us. Robert had told me that Gabby had stayed at Station 19 when he took Andy to the hospital after she was attacked, so that must be how she knows Vic.
"Hi Gabby!" We both said at the same time, causing her to start giggling.
"What are you two doing here?" She asked, and I looked at Vic nervously. She grabbed hold of my hand, and squeezed it comfortingly. I smiled at her gratefully before turning to Gabby, whilst still holding Vic's hand.
"Gabby, there's something we need to tell you. Your daddy, and Drea, got hurt today while they were putting out a fire," I said, deciding just to be straight with her. She's a smart girl, she would've figured out that something was wrong the second I started talking, no matter what I said.
"What happened? Are they okay?" She asked, as she started to cry. Vic crouched down next to me and pulled Gabby into a hug.
This was going to be hard. How are you supposed to tell a four year old that her only parent and his girlfriend might not even make it through surgery? We probably should've thought more about how we were going to do this before we got here.
"Can we have a minute please?" Vic asked Megan's parents, and they nodded, silently leaving the room with their daughter.
We both sat down on the couch, sitting Gabby in between us.
"Gabby, sweetie, they got hurt very bad. Do you know what surgery is?" I asked.
"It's when a doctor cuts you open to make you better," she said.
"That's right. Well your daddy and Drea are both in surgery right now, so we have to wait until the doctors are finished until we know how they're going to be," I explained.
When Gabby stayed silent, Vic spoke up.
"Do you want to go to the hospital so you can be there when they wake up?" She asked, her voice gentle and quiet. Still not talking, Gabby nodded her head, so I stood up and went to tell Megan's parents that we were leaving.
When I came back into the room, Gabby was sat on Vic's lap, crying silently onto her shoulder. Vic and I made eye contact, and then she stood up, still holding Gabby.
In silence, we got in her car, and drove back to the hospital. This time, she passed me the keys, and I drove, whilst she sat in the back with Gabby, seeing as she didn't have a car seat.
As soon as we walked into the hospital, Dr Grey and Dr Bailey came over to us, unreadable expressions on both of their faces.
