Vic's pov
With everything that's going on today, I felt bad that I was so happy about what had happened between me and Lucas. My mind was a mess. I was so scared that Andy and her boyfriend Robert wouldn't make it through surgery. Lucas was the one slither of happiness in my day.
It took a while for it to sink in. When we told Gabby what had happened, that's when it all became so much more real. There's a chance that one, or both, of them might not make it through surgery.
When the three of us had got back to the hospital, Dr Grey and Dr Bailey had walked over to us straight away.
"How are they? Are they out of surgery yet?" I asked, desperate to know what the update was. Lucas and I were holding one of Gabby's hands each, and now he reached across and put his arm around me too. Neither of our teams were anywhere to be seen, so it wasn't like we had to hide or anything.
"They both made it through surgery. It's going to be a long road to recovery, but barring any complications, they should be okay," Dr Grey said, and I let out a breath I hadn't noticed I was holding.
"Thank you so much. Can we see them?" Lucas asked.
"Yes, but only you three for now. The others know they're out of surgery, but they can't have too many visitors at once. We put them in a joint room, so we can take you to them now," Dr Bailey told us, and we followed her to a hospital room.
When we got there, both Andy and Robert were hooked up to all sorts of machines and wires, and they both had cuts all over their faces. That was only the injuries we could see, as they were covered with a thin hospital blanket.
I felt Gabby's grip on my hand tighten, and I looked down to see tears flowing down her face. That's when I realised that I'd been so upset myself that I didn't even think about how Gabby must feel seeing them both like this.
"Hey, I'm going to take Gabby outside for a bit, will you call me if there's any changes?" I whispered to Lucas.
"Yeah, of course," he said, smiling sadly at me.
As I guided Gabby out of the room, I kissed Lucas quickly, and he kissed me back. Then, I headed to the cafeteria with Gabby.
When I looked at her, I saw that she was still crying, silently. I couldn't blame her, this must be so horrible for her.
I didn't know Gabby that well, this was only the third time I've seen her, so I didn't know what to do or say to make her feel better.
"Are they going to wake up?" Gabby asked, and I looked over at her.
"Yes, we hope so, they're just sleeping now. Do you want something to eat?" I asked, but she just shook her head.
"Can you tell me a story about Drea? I know you don't know my daddy that well, but you work with Drea, so you've got to have stories about her," Gabby asked.
"Of course I can, do you want to stay here or go outside to hear one?" I asked.
"Outside please," she replied, so I nodded, and we went and found a bench outside.
"So, one time, me and Travis, he also works with us, decided to prank Drea. When she was out on a call, we put temporary, that means it doesn't last long, hair dye in her shampoo. When she came back, she had soot in her hair, so she went to wash it, and she came back out again with bright pink hair. The funny thing is, she didn't even notice for a while, so she was just walking around like that. Then when we were out on another call, there was a little girl, about your age, and she said to Drea, "I love your hair, I wanted to dye my hair pink too but Mommy wouldn't let me." And Drea was really confused, and then when we got back to the station, she looked in the mirror, and saw that her hair was pink. She knew that it was us that did it though, so a few days later she pranked us back," I told Gabby. I hadn't wanted to tell her a story about a call, because that would've probably just made her more scared, so I told her that one to make her laugh.
Sure enough, she started to giggle ever so slightly, though there were still tears in her eyes.
"I want to dye my hair pink too!" She said, and I laughed.
"Well, I don't know about dying it pink, but how about we go down to the gift shop and see if we can find a pink hair clip?" I suggested, and Gabby nodded her head.
We walked down to the gift shop, and when we got there Gabby started to look around. It didn't take long for her to find a pink hair clip on one of the shelves, which she looked at, and then looked up at me nervously.
"Is that the one you want?" I asked, smiling at her, and she nodded. "Okay, pass it here, I'll get it for you. Do you want anything else while we're here?"
"Can I get something for daddy and Drea please?" Gabby asked quietly.
"Of course! What do you want to get them?" I asked her.
She looked around for a few minutes, but then she stopped when she got to the balloons.
"Can we get them balloons?" She asked.
"Yes, why don't you pick one for each of them, and then we can take them up to their room?" I suggested, and Gabby nodded. She picked out two balloons, both of them saying Get Well Soon on them, and handed them to me.
I paid for the balloons and the hair clip, and then crouched down beside Gabby.
"Do you want me to put this in your hair now?" I asked.
"Yes please," she answered, tilting her head slightly so it would be easier for me to put the hair clip in.
"Okay, will you hold these balloons for me while I do it?" I asked, and Gabby nodded, holding the strings of the balloons tightly in both hands.
I moved part of her hair to the side a little bit, and then clipped the hair clip onto it, smoothing it out after.
"There you go," I said when it was in properly.
"Thank you," she said, and I smiled.
Then, we walked back up to Andy and Robert's hospital room. I felt Gabby tensing up beside me as we got nearer, but she carried on walking anyway.
When we got there, they were both still asleep, which was to be expected. Lucas was sat on one of the chairs beside Robert's hospital bed, but he stood up when he saw us walking up.
"How did it go?" He whispered to me.
"Not as bad as I expected. She's still upset, obviously, but she's calmed down a bit. Any changed with them?" I asked.
"None yet. The doctors said they have no way of knowing when they will wake up," he told me. He might not of said it, but I knew what else the doctors probably said. They have no way of knowing when, or if, they're going to wake up. But they have to. Station 19 needs Andy to wake up, Station 88 needs Robert to wake up, Gabby needs both of them to wake up. Andy might not be Gabby's birth Mom, but I've seen how close they are.
I blinked back a few tears and then looked down at Gabby. Taking a deep breath, I started to speak, trying not to let my emotions visible in my voice, which is something we learned at the fire academy. Except this wasn't training, or even a real life call, this was my best friend, her boyfriend, and his kid. I wasn't a firefighter right now, I was a friend.
"Why don't you put the balloons by their beds?" I said, and Gabby nodded, taking a few steps closer. She put a balloon down by the side of each hospital bed, and then ran out of the room crying. I was about to follow her, when Lucas put a hand on my shoulder to stop me.
"I'll go. You stay here, sit with them for a bit," he said, and I nodded.
Then, he ran off in the direction that Gabby had gone, leaving me alone in the hospital room. Not really alone, because Andy and Robert were both there, but I felt like I was alone. It felt weird. They were both asleep, and I didn't know if they could hear me.
Sighing, I sat in the chair next to Andy's bed, and leant back in it. I didn't know what to do, whether I should stay silent or talk to her. Eventually I decided to just talk for a bit. If she could hear me, then she'll hear whatever I say. If she can't, then it doesn't really matter.
"Hey Andy, I don't know if you can hear me but... Gabby's really worried about both of you, and she needs you both to wake up. We all need you both to wake up. Please," I whispered, my voice breaking slightly as the tears started to roll down my face.
For a second, I thought I felt Andy squeezing my hand, but then I realised I was probably just imagining it. I laughed it off, but then I felt it again.
"Andy? Andy, can you hear me? Dr Grey!" I shouted seeing her walking past.
"Everything okay Vic?" She asked, pausing in front of the door.
"Andy just squeezed my hand," I told her, and she made her way into the room.
"Are you sure?" Dr Grey asked, and I nodded my head, yes. I hadn't been sure the first time, but now I was.
I was ushered out of the room, into the hallway. Seeing as I clearly wasn't going to be allowed back in until they knew what was going on with Andy, I pulled my phone out of my pocket to text Lucas.
V: Hey, where are you and Gabby?
L: We're outside, is everything okay?
V: I'm not sure, somethings happening with Andy. I think she might be waking up.
L: That's great! I'll come back up with Gabby.
V: okay, see you in a minute.
I put my phone back in my pocket, and then tried to look back into the hospital room to see what was going on. However, my view was blocked by nurses and doctors rushing around the room, which did nothing to calm my nerves.
Luckily, only a few moments later, Lucas came up behind me, with Gabby beside me. I hugged him quickly, and then the three of us stood and waited for an update.
"Hey, what's going on?" Maya asked, as she came speed-walking around the corner.
"We don't know, but somethings definitely happening. Andy squeezed my hand before and now there's doctors everywhere," I told her.
Maya was about to say something in response, but Dr Grey came out of the hospital room and walked over to the four of us.
"Is she okay? Is she awake?" I asked.A/n: sorry if there's any mistakes, I haven't proof read yet but I will later.
