I wanted to kill the Moon Goddess.

Not literally. Or figuratively. Or at all.

I slowly exhaled as I shaked slightly. "What is that supposed to mean?"

Iris looked over at me. "You have a power, Katya. One that the Vampire King sees as a threat. For centuries the only being more powerful than Lycan was an Ancient vampire. But now, the tides have changed. In Stark, the Lycans see a leader. But now he's fallen from our grasp- and they now see you: their hope."

I took a step back. "Hope? Who in their right mind would give a werewolf the Luna position of the entirety of Lycans?"

Her eyes narrowed. "Are you saying my choice was misjudged?"

"Exactly!" I blurted out. "You must be insane-"

"I am desperate. Without a leader like Stark who else are they going to turn to?"

"Lorena." I breathed. "Have Lorena is charge. Stark and her talked about strategies all the time when were at Iris' place. She's the oldest as well."

"I will not revoke your title." she insisted firmly. "I believe in your power to instill hope. And although Stark is not with you now to enhance that power, it is obvious that you do not need him to let your abilities show through."

The orange of day peeked from the horizon. Was it morning already? I felt a million eyes on me as I looked back down from the sky. Accept the title...or what? They couldn't kill me.

But they can lose what little respect they have for you.

That put a twist on things. I couldn't call their attention without including the threat of Nikolai's power. If I were to become the Luna of the Lycans, I had to show them and the royals that I was a proper candidate- the only candidate- fit for the role.

"If there's no other option..." I took a shaky breath, meeting Lorena's eyes as I begged her to stand up and object as if it were my weeding day. "Then I accept."

The sun broke across the horizon as the day was born. Iris' body shuddered as she stumbled back off the podium. A silver outline of a female body escaped Iris as she split with the Moon Goddess.

Kyo caught Iris as I cradled her head. She blinked her eyes open and groaned. "Ah, fudge. I can never get used to that."

I smiled. "I wouldn't be surprised if you did."

Another voice, a smaller and more quieter one lilted from the back of the royals. "Is it official then? You're our Luna?"

I caught the gaze of a young girl from the Jaeger family. I left Iris to Kyo and stepped up onto the podium. "Yes, yes I am." My teeth sank into my lower lip as I waited for their reaction.

Before they had time to form a response, the mating bond buried deep within me jerked to life. I gasped and turned my head to the direction of the unique woodsy scent of my mate to the treelines.

A blur fell back as the sunlight filtered into the trees.

My heart soared violently as butterflies erupted in my stomach. Stark.
