While all the boys are out at the grocery store, gym, and work, the three girls are sitting on the kitchen counter. I'm next to the sink, Kelsey is on the peninsula by the bar stools, and Dakota is on the island. All of us are eating fruit pops that Kelsey made.
"These taste boring," Dakota whines.
"They're supposed to be naturally energizing," Kelsey replies. We've all been trying to eat as Dakota has to. That means very limited caffeine. Coffee the other day was a huge treat.
"Fuck this! I've only had two iced coffees this entire pregnancy. TWO!" Dakota yells. Within seconds, tears are falling down her face.
"Are you seriously crying?" I scoff.
"I'm hormonal!" She cries out. The door opens and halts our conversation. Kelsey hops off the counter to go check to see who is home.
"It's just Chris," she announces nonchalantly upon returning. We all let out a breath.
Dakota runs her hands through her hair, "Ughhhh. Being pregnant sucks. Even more so when you're 21 and have a poor relationship with the baby daddy. Did I tell you guys that he asked to see the bump? HE ASKED TO SEE THE BUMP!"
Kelsey and I nervously look at each other. Dakota can get really scary really fast. She's so tiny but can hold so much anger.
"No, I don't think you did," I say.
"What's so bad about him wanting to see the bump?" Chris asks as he sets his water bottle and keys on the counter.
"Because I don't want to let him in! It's a foot in the door. The doctors appointment is going to be bad enough. If I let him play dad for a second, then I'm going to end up with him in 18 years sending our son or daughter off to college from our big house with a dog and two more kids! I will not let myself fall in love with him."
"Why not? What's so bad about that?" Chris asks the questions Kelsey and I have asked hundreds of times.
"He left me, Chris. I told him I was pregnant, and he left me. I can't trust him. And I can't- I won't forgive that."
"He's not that guy, Dakota. I know he fucked up, but he's not that guy!" Chris defends Haz.
"Please let me make my own decisions about my kid," Dakota replies calmly.
