You have been complaining about stomach pain for weeks now. Mom took you to the hospital. We are in the waiting room right now. We are all so nervous, I try to calm you down. I know you hate hospitals. We all do. Dad died here a few months ago, this place holds so many negative memories. We live in a little town in California where a huge forest is near. You love this place so much.
The doctor calls your name and mom wants me to stay in the waiting room. After hours of waiting, you two come back, mom holding back her tears. She says to me:"The doctors found a large mass in her abdomen. We will go to a children's hospital specialized for cancer." I look at you Emi, totally shocked. I don't even exactly know what cancer is, I just know it is really dangerous.
In the children's hospital, they make many tests with you. A biopsy from your tumor, a biopsy from your bone marrow, blood work and so much more. Days later, the tests come back. The doctor looks at us and says:"Emi has cancer. Stage IV Neuroblastoma." Mom breaks down in front of our eyes. You start crying too, you hate to see mom cry. Then we get to know that your treatment starts this evening, we will all stay here for 3 months. I am so scared, we don't want to stay here. This place is horrible. I see the doctors calming mom down. I hold you tight, I am scared of the future. Will everything be good again? That's the question I ask myself this night.
